I am no professional by any means but I tend to trust most assistants more than other roles, even managers sometimes. Managers delegate to assistants and assistants know how the Balenciaga BB Logo shirt it is in the first place but running of things go when managers can be stuck in offices losing track of things. I’m looking for a new job and actively looking at “assistant” positions because that’s what I want. I don’t want to be in charge of anything. I like doing my bit and going home, so assistant it is. Titles mean very little in todays world. You can be a “Manager” or a “Lead” and have very few or no reports or influence beyond your direct work and then there will be an “Assistant” director who has a huge influence in a company. Also in some cases, like tech companies, one companies level for a “Senior” role is another companies “Junior” level. They are names and not much more. We live in a world where “sandwich artist” is a job, and you’re worried that the term “assistant” would be negative? 😛

It’s only negative in the Balenciaga BB Logo shirt it is in the first place but sense that you’re at the start of your career and still learning (bottom of the career ladder). But you’re also someone with leaps and bounds of potential as you’re not going to be in that position forever. In that sense, it’s only negative if you’re going to be the “assistant” forever, without the potential to learn and progress. Then again you might be happy without the responsibilities the non-assistant role entails. So I guess like everything, it just depends on your circumstances and what you want and care about. I work in marketing and there has seemed to be a massive move away from using terms like ‘assistant’ in a job title. The fact is, at an early level you are the one assisting on projects and that is its own role with responsibilities that you are responsible for. It doesn’t help anyone to distort this, as it leads to unreasonable expectations of the job. If you think innuendo looks better on a CV, hiring managers are wise to this and it will be clear when someone was at an assistant level as soon as you speak to them. Even if the work is repetitive and, at times, tedious, they are the best ways to learn (in a good organisation), because you will be assisting people who know their shit and on projects that are meaningful. I have spoken to people with 3 years ‘marketing’ as a grad ‘Channel Manager’ (eg. social media manager) role at a small company where they were the only marketer. In general, these people are less clued in than people with 2 months as an assistant in a good team.
