I got annoyed with my local takeaway chaps years ago because they called my husband “boss” and me (a woman) “darling”. Like, excuse me? I can be a boss too, even though I am but a mere woman! But then I just felt icky about it all. We’re both white, and they weren’t, and I didn’t like it. Only in corporate and very middle class environments, most people in every day life don’t see it that way at all. The lady in our pub calls me darling all the time. My husband runs a building firm and I do a lot of work for him and the lads – I’m called love, darling, sweetheart, mate, treacle, boss etc etc etc. I’m a Londoner based now in the South East and I get told all the time it’s not a southern thing to talk like that but it is for many of us. I actually use love way more than darling. Although both are gender neutral for me, darling skews way more feminine. “Love” is about as gender neutral as you can get. As a Northern woman, I beg to differ! I probably wouldn’t kick off about it but it would give me a queasy feeling in my stomach. It comes across as lecherous and condescending. I understand that depending on the context it can be condescending but it is used by woman and men alike, probably more by older ladies than anyone, when I’m in a place where it’s common I’ll have lots of old ladies call me love, it’s endearing not malicious.

The women I know don’t have this trouble. Interesting to me that a man expressed his opinion on what is and isn’t sexist in relation to how a woman is addressed and he’s the one getting upvoted while the woman who expresses her opinion gets downvoted. If I was a cynic, I might say it shows we have a problem with sexism in this country, eh? Everyone else can see intent matters especially when certain words are in common parlance and as part of the regional vernacular. You’re getting mighty defensive about this, aren’t you? Good for you for being equal in how you treat men and women. Still doesn’t mean women won’t like how you refer to them, or being blasted for expressing an opinion.
