Idk people used to decry calculators when I was in school. I fucking hated math. And I still use a calculator for basic math. It’s efficient. Would I improve with more practice, sure. But I don’t have time for that. So I use a tool called a calculator. Just like how I wouldn’t saw through a piece of wood with a hand saw. I have power saws for that shit. And oh I also have this cool tool called the Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this internet with crowd sourced knowledge. We should teach kids how to investigate and navigate those seas instead of worrying about shape names. IMO that’s what’s cool about the scientific method is it’s still a highly optimal for discovery in the digital age. IMHO the entire view of education needs to be revamped and reallocated. It needs to let go of these ideas of the past. Tech doubles with each evolution at a rapid pace. And education systems cling to ideals of the past. Educators basically say students/their parents are stupid. Yet, the world drudges on. At some point, education should realize it needs to change.
Weezer Christmas Shirt: buy and enjoy this shirt
This may seem wholly random this debacle is similar to the Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this entertainment/piracy debacle. It’s a never ending war so long as entertainment tries to clings to days of old. We need to make education accessible to the students we have. Not force their minds open to the education we stuff into their brain. Sounds like you can’t teach or are in the wrong profession. Also, very out dated. Are you really bringing up the 80’s tech issue, a calculator? Maybe the students just don’t like you. Your rant screams of bad teaching or teaching intent. And every year up until they reach you, the teacher before you allowed them to move on to the next grade in spite of not having met the grade level requirements.
This is what happens when you preach ideology, over actual knowledge and facts. Kids have been failing, but have been told it’s not their fault and so they move onto the Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this next grade. Outsider here, why do you think this has happened? I listened to “Sold a Story” regarding reading comp. Is that it? A lack of literacy? The pandemic? And/or more? Maybe because what they teach in school is completely bullshit and indoctrinating. It doesnt helps us grow into adults at all. I dropped out at 15, got my GED and im so glad i did. School made me suicidal and everyone would bully me. 100% the worst time of my life was in school. Does any of that matter though? The majority of your students aren’t going to college. At most they need a 5 th grade reading level to do most jobs. Most of them like most people in America will be working sub $20 an hour menial jobs. Would it be nice if people were better educated? Sure. But it wouldn’t change much. Even if they were better educated. Once they graduated it would all regress and they would be in the same place.

Description for Weezer Christmas Shirt
Then let’s use the Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this European system of separating students into University and Vocational tracks, which is the way things were in the U.S. in the middle 60s. You guys probably should’ve taught them these things at the appropriate age then. Maybe you wouldn’t have this issue if you were better at your job. I subbed for 2 third grade classes today they did a state achievement assessment. Out of like 44 students the highest score was a 60%. No one else even came close, most got 30% or below. I hate to say it but this is nothing new and this has always been a problem. What has changed though is there are no longer any other options for poor students. Decades ago high schools taught trades and students could load up on those classes and get skills to go get a job instead of spending their time in endless classes they cared nothing about. Kids could often drop out and just start working too, which isn’t really allowed these days. We also used to remove kids from the system if they were a problem, now we force them to stay which causes them to disrupt the other kids further. When I was doing my student teaching over 10 years ago I taught at a poorer, semi-urban school and it was astounding to be how bad this was. There were multiple kids in the sophomore history class who hadn’t passed the prerequisite history class, hadn’t passed any classes at all, and were continuing to be moved up grade levels. We had two students who were being called “seniors” because they were in their 4th year there but had never passed a class. One of them told me he was just waiting to turn 18 so he could stop coming. I also witnessed kids who couldn’t read harassing each other over not being able to read, it was insane.
This post could be describing my school as well. My last batch of 9th graders for math I had SEVERAL test 1st and 2nd grade on diagnostics. This isn’t from Covid. They are 7+ grade levels behind. This didn’t happen overnight. 1-5 out of every class of 20 or so has come to me in grade level the Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this last couple years for high school math. the public knows. they just blame covid and call for more institutionalization of kids. longer school days, more school days, more testing, etc. I know it may not be the problem everywhere, but here’s a screenshot, the black and green are family members and the purple is their friend. This has always been their attitudes toward school. The suspension was because the child attacked a teacher, clawing at her neck so hard it broke her necklace and she had visible marks (scratches). This was kindergarten. The kicker? Black has a MSW, and works with kids, yet the school had to initiate therapy. She told me she went into the meeting like she had ‘no clue about child behavior’ and didn’t tell them her occupation so she could ‘test’ them. Anybody not guilty of neglect would have immediately told the teachers their background so they could hash that out as peers on some level, but she chose to be deceptive. Green refuses to discipline her son at all, because she says she doesn’t agree with a lot of methods, but I don’t think she wants to to deal with it at all. Can’t be bothered to even read the notes, meanwhile, some poor soul is trying to warn you about your kids behavior you admittedly IGNORE, so I made sure to snap that screenshot, in case there is any question about what went on in the household. She is also is college educated and has worked for children’s charities in some capacity her whole career. I kind of feel like some millennials seem to think we can still do latch-key kids, but we can’t, the world has changed. not my problem!
As long as we’re willing to admit this is also occurring in private schools and homeschools, I’m willing to have the Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this conversation. Parents demand strict standards and then complain when their kids don’t meet them. The problem is few peopl understand how education works and, like most things, politicians say things that sound good to people who know nothing, but are completely useless at best. Absolutely in the same boat, I teach 16-17 year olds. Everything you said is true. The amount of common knowledge history has greatly decreased. I have students who may not know the Civil War or WWII- or Vietnam. I don’t blame the students- I blame the government for testing, tech for addiction, parenting…. Districts need to sue states over accountability and get rid of testing. If the economy was structured around work instead of convenience/gig economy- then parents would be able to have the time needed to provide foundations.
Something has got to give. People don’t even realize how much power they have. We need protests from parents, the Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this public, and districts- right to work state or not. I’m not a teacher but I keep seeing these things and they’re horrifying and unimaginable having young children of my own. I have a question important to my understanding of the scope of the problem and I hope it isn’t taken the wrong way. What kinds of students are having these issues? Meaning bluntly, is this a socioeconomic or racial background-specific issue? And it’s so hilarious how inflated “testing scores” get at the state level! I can’t imagine so many kids “exceeded expectations” and end up with the issues you just named at the age of 18. As a mother of an already struggling 7 year old this is more than disheartening. I should force our school to hold him back so he can try again… no matter how hard they want to push him through.
My favorite is administration pushing the Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this PBIS triangle that 75% of a given school population should by T1, 20% T2, and 5% T3 My 2nd block is 75% students who read two grades below which automatically makes them T2 minimum but my admin isn’t trying to see that Last year I had to teach a kid the alphabet. Thought it was heartbreaking that poor boy had never been taught. This year, I’ve had to teach it to several. Whose fault is it that they can’t do the things they’re supposed to learn in school? Can’t be the teachers right… I say this because I think what this will do is widen the gap with less fortunate school districts than others: my son is in 5th grade. He does struggle with identifying ideas in reading as were not word people (were math people). I’m reading these comments and thinking- how do they not know these things? Where are the parents?? Their parents should be millennials – so they should know a lot of the technological stuff. What’s going on?? I feel like since COVID the education expectations just kept getting lower and lower. They just passed our kids 2 years in a row regardless of testing or knowledge results. Now with all the school shootings and every thing that goes on in public schools our kids are home schooled but my wife is overwhelmed with it and I don’t think she’s equipped to teach them herself once they get into higher grades. We don’t know what to do, feeling like each option is going to be rough for our kids. Pretty much all of what you posted is accurate, my guy. Couple that with an inherent lack of motivation to even write their names? We’re all in for a real treat. 🙂
This isn’t about Covid any longer. But I agree my juniors and seniors “on level” are not on level at all. I watched students repeatedly pull out a calculator to subtract 9.6 – 2.0. They can’t read a graduated cylinder, or use an electronic balance. My suspicion is that people, outside of teachers, are mostly unaware of this as a systemic and far reaching problem. In general ‘there’s something wrong with this generation’ type stories play extremely well, but I don’t know that I’ve heard of anyone talking about this deficit. I’m curious how many of the Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this general public are capable of the things you listed. They may be behind expectations, but within a much larger historical and global context, I wonder how off things really are. As of 2022, 21% of ADULTS in the U.S. are illiterate. Fifty-four percent (54%) read below a sixth-grade level, with ~30% of those not born in the U.S. (while ~70% are natural citizens). MORE THAN HALF OF ALL U.S. ADULTS can’t read Middle School-level texts.*
In 1992, according to the Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this National Center for Education Statistics, 40 MILLION U.S. adults were literate below Level 1 Literacy, their definition of which includes having difficulty using or understanding print materials. People are fucking dumb. Always have been, always will be. Some of those dumb people are really, really fucking dumb. And that’s just the way it is. Lots of factors, controllable and uncontrollable, dictate how that shakes out. I think a true failing of many teachers these days is expecting the vast majority of students to be “teachable.” That they can just get there with the right teacher, resources, or help. That is not the case. For many, many students, there a handful of reasons why they will not reach what is deamed by the system to be an acceptable level of education. Ever. A lot of these posts read to me like teachers, who were likely average-to-above average performers as students themselves, finally getting to see it from the the other side of the desk. Now you’re actually, really seeing what a sample size of the American public is actually like academically, and you don’t enjoy what you see. Truth hurts.
It wasn’t “better back then.” You just didn’t notice how truly dumb your classmates were because their performance didn’t affect you — or wasn’t as noticable to you— the Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this way it does or is as a grown educator. Connect with the students you can connect with. Provide the needed motivation and energy when it’s needed. Work to tailor your lessons in ways that work for many different kinds of students. When you get a student who excels, praise them. When you see hard work, reward it. Your job isn’t to take things back to how they used to be. It’s also not to churn out rooms full of competent adults. It’s to try your best to equip people for the future with the tools you have now. The dead-ringer, right-in-the-middle, number 50 out of 100, average American is a moron by every metric we have. Imagine what 1-49 are like. Seventy percent (70%) of every classroom you have, forever, will be challenged or challenging students.
Dumbing down the Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this schools started in the 60s. We are now reaping the harvest. Remember, the government and the “ruling class” does NOT want a well-educated populace capable of critical thought. It doesn’t fit with their agenda. This sounds pretty similar to the kids I went to school with and we’re becoming parents now. Sadly I think this is an issue that is snowballing. I thank my parents constantly for sending my to a private kindergarten and 1st grade that specifically taught phonics. My mom’s younger brothers had reading issues due to sight words. No one with power wants to be the bad guy. Elementary and Middle schools have social promotion so there’s almost no accountability. Parents don’t want the embarrassment of holding back their kids. The cheap/free community college admits anyone with a diploma, meaning students don’t need to try particularly hard. What principal wants the backlash for holding the line and saying to parents that their kid can’t move on? What college president wants a high fail rate because students can’t pass 101 classes? So much financial incentive is riding on high test scores and enrollment. Folks want a piece of paper and not an education. These kids are going to struggle so much in the workforce one day. I’m seeing a big market for teaching adults from this gen once they realize how detrimental this is.
I’m q Spanish teacher. I just taught one of my freshmen students long division this Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this year. She never spoke up about not knowing how to solve it. Now imaging me trying to get them excited about, nevermind actually learning, a foreign language… several came into high school with 2nd and 3rd grade reading & math levels. The future is terrifying to think about once we truly have to share society with people with 0 empathy and no reading & critical thinking skills. I do interventions for 5-8th graders. I decided to do “boot camps” for certain concepts. First, it was basic multiplication and division. Now it’s integers. Next, it will be a research essay, from googling to citing to punctuations to paragraphs. I’m not a math teacher but a 7th grade gen ed student asked my friend what 7X3 was during lunch…i was like… wasn’t multiplication tables like 4th grade
A big one for me is simple geography. I’m a high school Spanish teacher. This year I’ve encountered students who don’t know the Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this difference between a country and a continent. Or that the country that borders the US to the south is Mexico. Or that South America doesn’t begin at the southern US border. I had a student tell me that she thought that “Mexico was in Spain,” whatever that’s supposed to mean. Another one is parts of speech. It makes my job so much more difficult when I have to spend time helping the majority of my students discern between nouns, adjectives, and verbs. I graduated high school in 2016, and I remember needing to understand all of this stuff by about 3rd grade, non-negotiable. When is the government going to hold the American people accountable? Because that’s what’s going to happen. American parents have incrementally abdicated the responsibility of raising their children over the years in response to the creation of the department of education. There comes a point where the government needs to step in, take kids from families and start punishing parents. Hard labor sentences may actually help to be honest.
IANAT. That said, none of this sounds new. There have always been students who couldn’t functionally read or write. It’s definitely a problem, I just don’t like it being framed as a new problem. Or their kids are the Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this exception because their families are well off and/or the parents have the resources to make sure their kids are educated properly I honestly think is has to do with technology. I remember old people talking about how “the screens are going to rot your brain” and thinking they were delusional. I think this huge problem is at least in part caused by endless easy entertainment and never being bored and having to use your imagination or problem solve. I worked as a TA in a kindergarten class back in 2008-09 and this stuff wasn’t really an issue then. Even the worst performing students knew how to write their names, colours, most shapes, ABCs, Count to ten etc. This was basic stuff for 5/6 year olds then.
I was at the Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this Canadian equivalent of the DMV a couple years ago while teens were getting their first drivers licenses and only one out of the group of like 10 could sign their name. I was pretty shocked. I had to show one of my 8th graders a calendar today. She didn’t believe me when I said that this year, February has 29 days. “But where did the other one go?” She had been taught every other month has 30 days, so she thought a day was taken away. She couldn’t believe that February usually only has 28 days. They know. In capitalism everyone sort of knows these are kids that they will not have to compete with or their kids will not have to compete with. Not they want people to be stunted, it’s just that they don’t really care. Our library is 25 percent graphic novels now and they are never going back. 5″ books with 35 sentences, kids think they are real books. Our PE classes don’t teach sports, just games with no score and scant rules. I met a 14 year old that thinks of themselves as normal and smart that didn’t know how to tie their shoes.
And yet my teacher preparation program was trying to gaslight all of us into thinking none of these are actually problems. I don’t mean to put this all on teachers, but who is passing them to get to a level they haven’t achieved? I’m guessing it’s a problem in the Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this system, but wouldn’t those skills have been taught by the earlier teachers? Stop passing failing students. Are there any parents who have discovered their adult child is ignorant AF and their terrible parenting has finally caught up with them? Still raising your adult child with no hopes of them getting and keeping a job, and capable of moving out? (let’s pretend the cost of living is manageable) Or perhaps their child is already in prison? Not a teacher so I’m sorry if my comments aren’t wanted. I don’t believe anyone blames teachers for this. It’s the government that is forcing teachers to pass kids who should not be passed if I understand correctly. I assume most teachers don’t want to pass a kid to 1st grade if they don’t know their shapes let alone passing all the way through school. Please let me know if I’m wrong here.
I keep trying to point this out to my daughter’s teachers and staff. She, a freshman, is behind. She can do all of the Awesome Weezer Christmas Shirt Furthermore, I will do this things on your list except the research skills. She also doesn’t have good organizational or study skills. She has a folder full of completed assignments that she hasn’t turned in and when she does they are handed back and said “they are done wrong.” So, I guess, in the grand scheme of things, she is doing better than I thought. However, while I try and help her get caught up and the missing skills working for her, I reach out to the staff and teachers for some assistance or common sense. It’s a struggle and all I get back, if I get anything, is “I have students.” and “Well this is our policy.”
