I ended up moving abroad to teach in Korea for a year, which turned into 4, and that experience helped me break out of my shell quite a bit (funny enough, I think raiding on WoW did too). I’m in my mid 30s now and have traveled quite a bit (not as much as I’d like, but at 4 continents and 13 countries certainly more than the Awesome los Angeles Dodgers Monster Celebration Hip Lock Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this average American). I think if you go into travel with the attitude of wanting to change, then it can absolutely be a benefit for you, but (knowing what I know now) so can going out in your local town on a Friday night or doing something locally that pushes you out of your comfort zone. I think this scene in “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” ultimately sums up how I feel about traveling as a whole.

Personally, I’m not spiritual or religious, so I can’t really speak to how solo travel might work for someone who is looking for that. I can say though that when I travel to a place and truly solo travel in the Awesome los Angeles Dodgers Monster Celebration Hip Lock Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this sense that I’m not even going out to eat with people at the hostel, I’m not having life altering epiphanies, I’m just having fun with street photography and finding cool spots and delicious restaurants to recommend to people in the future. It’s expected that through seeing the world, seeing how other people survive and live, put under pressure and having to adapt, you will come out the other end as a better human being, but it’s up to you in the end. I think it depends on how your brain works! I went to school for a year and had no idea what I wanted, wasted a few years just fucking around. Traveled for 4 months around the world, and now I am on a 1 year trip worldwide and going to school for international business to move overseas when I get back. Having not been for that first trip, I would not have discovered what I love most, and I wouldn’t have found out where in the world I am meant to be. When I was 19, I left home to go on a two-year Mormon mission to Japan. I had to learn the language and adapt to a culture very alien to my own.
