Turns out he was a POW camp guard in Okinawa. My grandfather joined the navy at 13. Family was dirt poor, 4 kids and a single mother left penniless by my asshole GGF. You could join with a parent’s signature if you were 15. He started smoking to look/seem older and she got him signed up. He was not the youngest ever, there was a boy younger in the Civil War, who served his whole life and retired like a colonel or general. Calvin Graham was the youngest WW2 service member. After he was discharged he married at like 14 and divorced before rejoining the Marines. He was working in Šabac and Belgrade when he reached the age of conscription, and at the military barracks in Slavonska Požega, he reported that he already had been in the army during the war. He also said that he had been wounded, and had received the Albanian Commemorative Medal. However, an ethnic Croat in the Royal Yugoslav Army tried to push Gavrić into signing a confession that he had told a lie. He refused, and was sent to prison, spending two months there.”
