How do you know you’re pulling up to the Awesome cooper gifted player in British football RANGERS T-Shirt but in fact I love this same position every time? You could have a tired arm and leave a dozen clicks after what felt like the usual maximum amount of resistance at the top. When I had an actual lever for the hand brake. I would not press the button. I like the sound and you know for certain the ratchet is engaging. Oh, the eternal struggle of the handbrake button! Well, personally, I like to live dangerously and just let it click and clack into position. I used to press it in, but after a few close mishaps where the brake slipped and disengaged while I was luckily still in the car, I always press it and haven’t had an issue since. I don’t have one anymore but i used to let it click but only because I always had it adjusted properly so it would only click 3 times and I would do it slowly and count the clicks, that way I can constantly monitor the wear on the brake pad/shoes and cable and adjust/replace accordingly. Just pressing the button and pulling hard adds unnecessary strain to the cable. My car’s manual says not to push the button. Vauxhall’s had issues a few years ago with the handbrake disengaging if the button had been used. I’d imagine if you push the button on the way up, you could slip back a notch or two without noticing. In my mind, it wouldn’t be a ratchet mechanism if it wasn’t supposed to ratchet. You are definitely not supposed to push the button. Source: am mechanic. The ratchet is supposed to hold it in place and the clicking is it ratcheting tighter. It is designed that way and anyone that tells you otherwise is an idiot.

In my 40 years of existence and 23 years of driving, not once have I ever come across someone who’s handbrake handle failed because they didn’t press the Awesome cooper gifted player in British football RANGERS T-Shirt but in fact I love this button when pulling it up. The clicking is a simple spring loaded rachet system in the handle that is only there to stop the handle dropping back down. If anything is going to fail, it’s the button itself, so pressing it less is probably better than pressing it all the time. I like to hear the “Hhhhick* noise to make doubly sure I’ve actually engaged it. Plus on mine, if I hold the button to do it, it requires more effort and hurts my arm I was always told not to use the button as very rarely the button could get stuck as the brake is between ratchets (not sure I’ve explained that very well) and actually leave you without a handbrake on. The clicks prove it’s engaged.
