Has anyone considered all the Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this chemicals and food additives in the American diet has destroyed the brains of the kids? Something is not right with these kids cognitively. As a young, childless women in science, is there anything that non-teachers can do to help? I had no idea it was this bad simply because i’m not around children or teachers in everyday life. I have 8th graders who can’t peer edit because their own grammar is so bad they don’t know what proper spelling, punctuation, capitalization and sentence structure is supposed to look like. Their idea of essay writing is to plagiarize from Google or AI generate, and when they are called out on it they don’t think I can tell the difference between 8th grade vocabulary and professional writing. I’m gen Z and not a teacher, but I missed a massive amount of school growing up from medical issues. I only just finished my highschool diploma at a community college last year as a 23 year old, and at 24 I am now over halfway through my first year of earning my associates degree. It should surprise no one that I have some pretty massive knowledge gaps, but I am continuously amazed by the fact that I’m not as far behind as many of my slightly younger peers. The latter half of Gen Z that went through/finished highschool during the pandemic are at such a disadvantage. It has definitely helped level the playing field for me a bit, but everything I hear about Gen Alpha makes me very worried for the future of society as a whole. How widespread is this educational divide? Any input from teachers who are not from the USA?

Not a teacher but it’s a darn shame what a lot of these kids are bringing to the Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this table. The sad reality of it is that there are multiple factors playing into this. Parents not advocating for their children, misusing technology as a way to “deal with” their children, the entitlement of many kids because their parents raised them to be that way, etc. These lessons should have been established long before entering school and unfortunately the children will suffer and future generations will as well Dedicated to open discussion about all things teaching. Back to TopJesus. I was a bit of a slow learner when younger because of distractions, but this thread… holy shit. Once I grew up and saw who was running the Department of Education, I knew things were not going to be good. Should this be considered educational warfare to some degree? Schools so underfunded for so long (while we supply billions upon billions a year to arms dealers/manufacturers), curriculum so incredibly lackluster (relative to the day and age we currently live in), and children being flat out ignored by their family (otherwise they’d have the motivation/mindset to actively learn).
I’m reminded of how China has put extreme emphasis on their children’s learning, even to the Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this point of enforcing a curfew/time-restraint on their ability to browse entertainment apps or play games. Children in the US seem to mostly be unbridled consumers of products and entertainment. Also reminded of the quote “If you want to destroy any nation without war, make adultery or nudity common in the young generation.” – Salahuddin Ayyubi . The end result is the same regardless of there being an aggressor or it being self inflicted, and regardless of the destruction coming from adultery or absolute ignorance. As a parent, any advice on where I can turn to understand/know where my kids should be? We move every couple of years with the military, so the kids have been in a few schools and a few states. Each time I try to grasp what the goals for the year are (what they should know by the end of the year), and I can’t figure it out I’m a student teacher for 7-12 math. My lesson plans for my seventh graders are based on third grade lessons. They expect us to teach multiplying fractions and ratios to seventh graders who lack multiplication fluency

I worked as an airport assistant for unaccompanied minors a few years back, and honestly even that feels like a stretch. Saw everything from children to late teens have absolutely no idea how to do something as simple as connect to a specific wifi signal if their phone didn’t do so automatically, or use their browser app. My folks are 71 and they’re less baffled by electronics than these kids, it’s extremely concerning. This is so sad. It’s wild. I’m in my Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this mid 30s and I remembered playing Mavis Beacon in school to learn how to type… I literally thought that these kids would be so much more proficient at reading and writing because they spent their entire life in front of a keyboard/screen… like Mavis, Beacon was boring… But texting your friends is interesting… You would think that passively they would learn how to read and write… Especially with AutoCorrect…
What do you think is the Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this cause? Based off of the ages it doesn’t sound like the COVID shutdown is the biggest cause. Possibly there were problems before 2020. My oldest is 6 but she goes full time to an autism therapy clinic. Unfortunately she’s nonverbal so we’re more concerned with her learning her AAC than writing. Kindergarten was pretty bad for her. It was clear her sped teacher stuck her in a corner with things to stim with and let her do whatever she wanted. We’re trying our hardest to get out of Texas to a state that cares about special needs kiddos. I have a 2 year old and she’s a little sponge so I’m casually teaching her shapes. But big shout out to Sesame Street and Ms Rachel. I was at a parent night at my kids’ school recently and they showed scores for a certain reading test by grade level. The Kindergartners scored pretty high, but the average scores went down drastically year after year. By 5th grade, the reading scores showed about 35% of the students reaching a passing or exceeding level. The other 65% were behind or failing. It was extremely eye opening for me. And we’re supposed to be at one of the best schools in our county. If that’s true, and it may very well be, then we are in so much trouble.
I’m not too worried about my kids yet, because they are both doing very well and seem to be learning a lot, but it is obviously concerning. And to think that when my district laid me off 10 years ago, the Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this superintendent claimed that students didn’t need a computer teacher because they were digital natives and already knew now to type and everything about computers and the internet. I’m not a teacher, I’m just a member of the general public and hearing some of the things I hear from this subreddit freaks me out. I also have heard things about how some kids are acting right now. And when you bring it up to the parents, it seems like they’ll be on the kids side no matter what. So there is no rectification, it’s going to continue, and it’s probably going to get worse when they become an adult.
I think about smartphones and social media, tik tok, so on and so forth. That stuff has got to have a negative effect on a kid’s development. Follow an example. They have a hard time transferring the Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this patterns that they see in an example to a new problem. I’d always wanted to be a high school teacher, but this sort of thing makes me really want to teach kindergarten or first grade I left the states and teach in Japan. I have kids that are 13-14 (1st year middle school, ish) not only being taught seriously high level stuff – pre-calculus, advanced bio, chemistry – which, for me, wasn’t available till high school and most kids didn’t take it but not only are they champs at taking classes at such young ages, they’re passing them with flying colors.
Granted, this is a private school in Tokyo – but when I was trying to teach in America they had me helping out with a teacher who was being forced to corral all the Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this worst offenders in the school into one class and try to make ‘due’ till the end of the school year. One of those kids pushed 3 girls in his class out of public school because he was stalking them, and he tried to kill one of the boys. The administrators did nothing time and time and time again, even when it got serious. Conclusion? Education in America has gotten way, way worse. The rest of the world will progress while America suffers Oh, it’s worse. But so-called the “bluntest” tools in the shed were always barely functionable. This was always the case and sure it was exacerbated last 15-20 years. The Ipad and touch screen generation is a thing.
The real problem will come from the Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this same deterioration in abilities that are traditionally solid A,B students. The kind that bags at least a couple state university and some small college offers. Hell, my personal experience is from a Tier 1, research university. These are the kids that’ gonna make the bulk of white-collar jobs and up. The difference in their quality in just barely a decade of span from 2015-2023 is staggering. If you thought an arbitrary 8th grade failing to solve 2x=8 is bad, then you have no idea what’s coming from what you think are the A students and how they are supposed to do most of the “carrying” that their demographics is supposed to do. Their confidence never wavered though which in some ways is the worst thing about all of this, if you ever had to deal with them in person.
I really hate the Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this fact I learned that gen z extends all the way to 2010-2012 ish. I honestly feel so passionate as to argue that I’m calling for a rebrand that genz hard stops at 2008. Don’t you dare group me with anyone born after the recession and couldn’t experience COD and halo lobbies. because we are absolutely completely different even by a matter of a few/handful of years. Anyone born 2008 and beyond is absolutely gen alpha. This is an absolute crime against humanity to even think 97s-2001 are grouped with kids born in 2010. In other words, gen z stops and ends with Wembenyama and Bedard. Y’all can have whoever comes after I’m fine with that. [Maybe you should learn other skill sets relevant to teaching beyond intimidation.] Do you know who is to blame for this? Their parents. Those who never took a shot in understanding the technology they gave to their kids, turning them into smartphone dependant zombies without values, goals or knowledge to achieve them… But everybody was so happy to join the hype of being on Facebook with their new iPhones, all day long!
I bet that they won’t be so happy when they see that their “influencer kid” became a useless skin sack because AI replaced everything they barely learned to do. I’m a web developer. You ever notice how the Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this fonts and buttons got a lot bigger than they used to be? Well I can’t make a button big and blue enough sometimes to make you see it, it’s the kind of shit that makes me wake up in cold sweats at 3am. ITS RIGHT THERE JUST LOOK WITH YOUR EYES. I don’t follow this subreddit, not even a teacher… Just came across this post on my feed and got intrigued – what do you think the reason is? And are posters mostly from the US? As a highschool student—how even? What happened to minimum grade requirements and such? How did these kids not get held back? I know that I complain about tests and final exams in highschool but at this rate I’m thinking that the elementary and middle schoolers need them, even if just simpler ones, because what the actual hell. My teacher in middle school taught us all how to type properly, navigate a computer, use word processing software and spreadsheets, find and cite sources, edit videos, write a resume, write a cover letter, write emails, identity scams, understand checks, and budget / manage money. And then there are kids who can’t even use keyboard shortcuts / type / navigate a browser? What happened?? Granted, I went to a private school, but if the public schools are this… poorly managed(?) I’m really starting to wonder if we shouldn’t just funnel all the education resources into those schools so the majority of the population is at least competent.
Edit: Don’t even get me started on the Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this reading / grammar / writing and the general lack of critical / logical / analytical thinking or just independent thought in general. The issue with constantly absorbing content and information is that you never actually think about it or create your own content / thoughts. I think schools need to put more emphasis on teaching students how to think and analyze information and not just mindlessly consume everything they see online. I read and write a lot in my own time and it has always been painful to me to hear people struggling to read passages outloud or sound out words, let alone reading and editing other people’s essays (to be fair some were quite good, but others read like the person who wrote them had a stroke halfway through).
As soon as covid shut down the Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this school I figured anyone that was a sophomore or less would basically become part of a no hope stagnant lost generation So are you blaming the f up US education system on the parents? Teachers aren’t telling the parents, their kids are several grades behind, they just ain’t. And what is the solution in closing this huge gap? Should we hold back these kids? I guess the school system expects these parents to supplement their education till 12 grade with no extra resources. Blame your administration not the parents. Spelling is rarely taught nowadays. I can’t fix a dumb down education system. As a ninth grader this genuinely doesn’t make sense to me. Like I know a ton of kids who are dumb straight up and the worst I’ve ever seen is someone not knowing how to add variables elsewise do people genuinely not know negatives? We took this in 6th grade You don’t think the public already knows this? I feel like everyone knows that kids are significantly behind. People just really don’t want to admit it, because it’s fucked.
Yes, I’ll admit that a worrying number of high school students are… struggling, to say the Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this least. However, I think it should be noted that there may be a bias in all of the negativity surrounding my generation. All of the top comments in this thread are sharing concurring anecdotes, and I can’t seem to find anything positive. I’d imagine that those who have been in a situation like the post described are more likely to share their thoughts and upvote those in a similar place than others. I expect that you lot, as educators, should recognize this bias; understand that it does not describe the entirety of Gen Z, or even most. You’re forgetting the silent majority. Of course, I don’t represent my generation; I’m far from being the ambassador, much less a spokesperson. I’m just a dude reminding everyone to take everything you read with a grain of salt. I just wanna say something, I can’t do simple math in my head. Like. If I can’t use my fingers and toes to count it out, I’m fucked. Need a calculator. I always have one in my pocket tho. I don’t know my multiplication tables. I’m an airline pilot. Most of my coworkers also can’t do math like that. Lmao.
Dance teacher and therapist here. Socially and emotionally they are 3-4 years behind what we would expect. Many kids 6-8 years crying when their parents leave, poor social skills, unable to follow simple directions or attend for more than 15 minutes at a time… It’s a mess. I’m a sub for tk-high school and what I’ve observed since I began working this school year has me shook. It doesn’t matter the Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this grade, these kids do not know how to read or do math. If I’m working at an elementary school, I bring my 7 year old’s flash cards to go over sight words with the students. I was in a 4th grade class recently and most didn’t know their multiplication tables but had to work on the 8’s. I made them chant the 8’s as a whole class for almost 5 minutes. Middle school kids can’t read or workout math problems with fractions. Usually, my instructions for the day ask me to read all assignments to them. High school isn’t much better. I wasn’t planning on going into education. My bs is in applied mathematics and my career plan was to sub while I take the first two exams to become an actuary. However, since I’ve been subbing it’s clear that the kids in my community need help. I saw a comment posted here that mentioned parent responsibility to their children. Their kids can’t read or do math but have access to playing Fort Night and/or have cell phones. These are the same parents that are quick to jump down the school’s throat if their child get reprimanded for bad behavior. As a parent of three, it breaks my heart because I know what I do at home cultivates an environment of love and learning. It’s something that all kids should have.
I’ve had students in middle school that don’t know how to sign their names, tell time, or how to write a date using numbers (2/22/24), “where does the Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this first two come from?” I’m astounded at times. I tutor at K-5 in low income schools through a non-profit, and kids are writing complete sentences, with punctuation. Their spelling is a bit iffy, but that’s normal at that age. The high schoolers I know are high achieving, and high stress. I worry for them about depression and burnout, not illiteracy. is this specific to certain states where theres less funding or this is a overall for the whole country? what do you think? Where is this happening? Up here in Illinois, we’ve got Common Core, so any lack of knowledge can usually be traced back to either a systemic error (should be in Common Core but isn’t) or an individual error (should have learned X in Yth grade) That said I have no idea how The Youths are managing right now. It’s impossible to tell someone doesn’t know jack shit just by talking to them casually I teach 4th grade and my kids cannot write sentences with capital letters or punctuation. They need reminders EVERY TIME. I’ve been teaching types of angles for 2 weeks. We’ve sang songs complete with arm movements to match each type and they still call an acute angle right. They retain NOTHING!! This is the hardest year of my 19 Year career. I’ve never seen such gaps in elementary. Not a teacher, but a parent. The gap between the gifted and the general public is the parents taking it into their own hands.
I’ve been tutoring my stepdaughter for years and seen her grades skyrocket since but damn the Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this school boards are failing kids by not teaching them how to decode words and it makes me sick. How are you ever supposed to move on to reading comprehension and making the switch from learning to read to reading to learn if you fail to learn to read?? SD was straight up crying the other day when I was helping her prepare for her oral presentation because I told her she had a great first draft… like if you were already perfect at it you wouldn’t be in school? That’s the whole point is you’re supposed to get better at these skills; but they don’t fail kids anymore and it’s a mess. The truth is that the vast majority of humans are sadly pretty unintelligent on average. Half of it is that education systems need massive overhauls and the other half is that genetically they can’t mentally get to the level the minority of us do. Definitely not something to look down upon people for but it’s definitely a bit frustrating feeling like so much could be accomplished if more people had higher brain capacity. I feel like a lot of new parents don’t take time to learn things to their kids. And a lot of the ones how do use apps instead of spending time with them. Some don’t even like school or trachersband teach that mindset to their kids. Some just straight up don’t educate their kids whatsoever…
In French, we have an expression… It’s “enfants rois”, which would translate to “kid kings”. It’s kids who is never disciplined in any way and can’t follow simple demands from anyone because of it. It was already a trend 10 years back. Now, it’s even worst. I teach HS Geometry and I can somehow get my kids to learn Trigonometry but then have to turn around and teach them how rounding works and what the Austin riley American professional baseball third baseman Atlanta Braves T-Shirt also I will do this decimal places are. High school junior coming in here to wonder if it has anything to do with class sizes. I’m at a small charter right now, but went to public schools until high school. My school isn’t a ‘gifted’ school or anything. It has people from very diverse backgrounds, ranging from children of professors at our local university to recent immigrants. It also seems to have a very high percentage of IEP or 504 students. I take many “advanced” courses and whatnot, but even in my generals, I haven’t noticed the problems being observed by teachers elsewhere. To get to my point, most of the students who have been here since elementary or middle school, including those with accommodations, seem to have pretty up to standard skills, even according to my mom, who teaches there. We also have very small class sizes, so it’s fairly easy for us to get help when we need it. Does anyone think this could be contributing, or is it something else? Just really curious after reading this thread.
