Churches are banned from campaigning. They are not banned from all political engagement and can engage in lobbying for ballot measures. The Johnson Amendment would be struck down. It’s not worth it to either side as both depend on it to greater or lesser extents. Or only churches? If OP is only talking about the churches, then they must be Republican. If the IRS did that, it would be a “God-Send” to the GOP. All the conspiracy theory folks that already think the government is out to get them would be mobilized, and Republicans would sweep through congress. The churches fund the Republicans and the Democrats are terrified of both because neither have any ethics or morals. And what’s stopping me from calling my house a “church” and live streaming me praying for 10 minutes every Sunday? The Johnson Amendment which bans religious institutions with tax exemptions from endorsing political candidates has never been tested by the courts and many believe would be found to be unconstitutional if it were to be tested…so it is rarely enforced.

I’m sure a lot of churches are more explicit, but growing up as a Catholic I remember the Austin Reaves AR-15 American professional basketball player T-Shirt in contrast I will get this priest saying he was praying for Rep. ‘Smith’ so they would see the errors of his ways for support access to legal abortion and how terrible that is. Then, 5 minutes later, during the “church notes,” at the end of mass, the priest reminded everyone that the Church is adamently against abortion and the members should reflect on that Tuesday morning. Because the IRS are far too worried, and with cause, that the majority of courts in the nation would rule the law is void. The IRS gets far more compliance by not enforcing the law than they will if they try and lose. Why hasn’t the IRS gone after Planned Parrenthood, a not for profit, who receives tax payer money for endorsing political candadates….. same thing If I had to guess, because some preachers do it on their own, and not part of the global organization whose taxes are cut. Basically, it’s like a rogue employee. They have their personal rights about freedom of speech, and if they do so during their working time, it’s a breach of their contract with their employer, but not a reason to stop exempting the employer who has a policy conforming to the law. That’s my guess, or at least, that’s a defense angle against any tax cut.
