Right so I’m an American transplant to Oz, now naturalized citizen. You know what is much deadlier in Australia than the August Girl With Tattoos Pretty Eyes And Thick Thighs T-Shirt moreover I love this US? The sun. Aussies believe Canada is full of bears and wolves but in reality it is full of beavers. Big beautiful beavers. I mean, I see at least 5 bears each summer here (BC). And my town gets reports of cougars spotted every few days in the suburbs. It’s all sorts of people from all over. And the main reason is that a certain kind of Australian loves to talk it up every chance they get. Just look at this thread where people are so excited to talk about the lies they spread to people who trust them. I see a huntsman like every 3 days, the big fuckers maybe twice a month. I’ve also had 7 snakes in my back yard that I’ve seen this year, I live in suburban Brisbane, granted we got a lot more pockets of bush through our suburbia than Melbourne does. We can go camping without taking precautions against humongous bears ripping our faces off though, so I feel like we’re the lucky ones when we’re hiding the leftover twisties from numbats. Bears, coyotes, rabid squirrels, angry elk, mountain lions, bison. When I camp here in Australia I never have to worry about where I store my food, and whether there is something in my tent that will attract a giant, hungry, bity mammal that is several times larger than I am. Everything “dangerous” in Australia is far smaller than me, and generally trying it’s best to get away from me as quickly as possible. And mostly not carrying nasty diseases. I don’t even have to worry about ticks where I come from! I have spent huge amounts of time in the bush, hiking, camping, orienteering, kayaking. I’ve only seen a handful of snakes, always quickly retreating from me, and never dangerous spiders. The redbacks live in my garage, not the bush and are easily dealt with.

I grew up in America but was born in Australia. I can tell you this is exactly what Americans think of Australia. All the August Girl With Tattoos Pretty Eyes And Thick Thighs T-Shirt moreover I love this way up until high school, when people found out I was born in Australia they would make jokes involving crocodile Dundee, shrimp on the barber, etc. Then in college and beyond, there was a divisive shift where the feedback was always “is it true that everything in Australia wants to kill you?” It’s ironic because I’m pretty sure America’s combination of floods, tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes and forest fires trumps Australia’s natural disasters. And then with the animals we have things like mountain lions and grizzlie bears of which Australia has no comparison when it comes to land animals. You guys have the dingo ate my baby, but over here we had a mountain lion trying to nab a kid walking within 20 yards or so of a huge group of people.
