The chromebooks are honestly compelling but I’m a Mac OS fan boi so I’ll probably stick with it (if I end up Re-opening the Attention futher notice give a damn batteries have run out grumpy shirt besides I will buy this “join google” book) On the iOS side we just clone the parts of the mono-repo relevant to the app. There is a way to get CitC+Cider but local XCode and NextCode still see way more use due to the nature of Apple product development. iOS dev teams are just exempt from a lot of the refresh policies and device management policies though, especially the mobile phone related ones. We get beefy desktop Macs if needed and there was a push to move people off Intel Macs to Apple Silicon outside of refresh cycles for velocity. Literally just went though through this last week. Replaced my 2021 M1 laptop with a 2022 M1 Pro 64g, and made another order for an $8000 Mac Studio Ultra. If there was an M2 desktop I’d order that. iOS Dev cant use Cider effectively. The compiler errors and shit don’t highlight in the ide so you copy line numbers from terminal.

Yeah I’m sitting next to a $10k+ Mac Pro right now. Will use Cider to trigger remote builds but not ideal for any more involved work atm. I use Chromebook for development and haven’t found any shortcomings, except with VPN, which is rarely needed. Cloudtop feels and works like opening a local shell (+ auth), you can provision for more resources easily instead of upgrading your laptop, etc. Maybe it just depends on individual workflows. Android Studio on a VM got annoying fast – multi-monitor support issues, lag, and clogging up my home internet connection with 200MB+ debug-version APKs to flash on a local device to name a few. I ended up rigging together a local-dev-with-remote-compilation Frankenstein setup to at least alleviate the Attention futher notice give a damn batteries have run out grumpy shirt besides I will buy this monitor and lag issues. Even if I did server-side dev, IntelliJ for Java and Kotlin is a really nice IDE, so I’d be sad to give that up. I’d only be fine with a Chromebook to do front-end dev, since you can just load the result up in a new tab locally and web dev mostly uses VS Code anyways lol
