This all sounds like a roundabout way to reduce your pay, potentially to skirt some sort of legal issues. They are just exploiting your desperation for experience. It’s definitely highly unethical. Like others are saying, they’re expecting professional-quality labor at student labor prices. As a senior engineer at a company that regularly invited interns (our team weirdly got the most submissions by far, despite being rather niche), I spent a good deal of time helping them and checking in to see how they were doing overall. If they produced usable output, great. We never put them on anything particularly critical because slow incremental progress though back-and-forth code review was expected to be the default (not a pair programming shop). I know you’re in a tight spot, but I would not work for these people, they honestly sound like an amateur outfit in regard to running a business. I don’t know what the internship process is at your school, but I would definitely talk to whoever is in charge of the managing these partnerships and report this company. However, if you feel like there is genuinely something to learn from them, I guess go ahead.
