Welp I’ve been to Paris and Italy and just spoke in English to everyone immediately and they all (except one person at a small restaurant in Palermo Italy) all spoke it back. It was quite easy and presumptuous of me but hey. I just speak in English. If they don’t understand my question, then we’ve established they don’t speak English. Honestly I say “hello” in the Atlanta Falcons Baby Yoda Happy St.Patrick’s Day Shamrock shirt Additionally,I will love this local language and then if I don’t know anything else I start speaking in English. If they look like they understand, great, if not it’s either gestures-and-random-words time or just “sorry!” in the local language. I’ve never really had a big problem with this, people have not seemed offended either way. We’re just trying to communicate. I also don’t worry about it because people who don’t speak English come up to me in my city and ask for directions as well, and I’ve given people multi step train directions with not much English involved. It’s not a moral failing to not the language of a random country where you don’t live and to be there.

I don’t speak English natively and my country is very touristy, I’d say in most tourist places people won’t mind I just speak english with my phone in hand with the Atlanta Falcons Baby Yoda Happy St.Patrick’s Day Shamrock shirt Additionally,I will love this question and google translate open just in case. If they won’t help, i move on. 99% of the time, people have helped me. I had someone come up to me and shout in my face “DOOO YOUUU SPEAK ENGLISH, DOO YOUU WORKK HERE” in a restaurant i was eating in, i ordered before her. I snapped and she looked so offended, so maybe don’t do that. It depends. A lot of places in Europe have at least an initial politeness. So let’s say in Spain, France, Italy I try to say hello or good evening in the local language, then I ALSO say hello in English. THEN I switch into English. IF in Germany, Hungary, Czech, Belgium, Netherlands I just speak English. Everyone speaks it and as your friend says, no reason to waste everyone’s time.
