Walmart used to ask for a donation then post a big sign on the wall saying how much “they” raised for the charity Because when you donate, they consider it revenue, which they then donate to charity, and thus get to write them sum as tax break! Yes, but only the donated money qualifies for the tax break, not the rest of their revenue. There’s no tax benefit for the company at large based on charitable donations at checkout. They aren’t benefitting from the tax break of charitable revenue, they’re benefiting from the goodwill of visibly donating to causes as a form of advertisement, or in some cases they hold onto that money to generate interest for as long as possible before donating the initial amount. If there’s in a year a 1M of donations, the company donates it, can’t they reduce their taxable income amount by that much?
