But honestly the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and most common reason is probably that pilots can’t hear the PA message so if there is a problem they don’t know and won’t report it. Probably a Blown speaker or filter. I used to know someone who worked the ATC back in the day, and he told me, “We can’t understand most of the chatter specifically, but we do understand the cadence and rhythm, so we know something is wrong if their speech is off. Otherwise, we just bark commands, get an acknowledgement, and the rest is just noise. The worst is when we need actual details, and then we use ‘the voice’ to get them to speak clearly, and usually they respond back in the same voice. Not always though.” I understand some of these answers basically boil down to: it’s not mission critical, so the airline doesn’t spend money on it. Which is fair enough, the pilot announcements are just meant to give some sense of competence to the customers. But what amazes me is how ATC and Pilots comprehend each other. I’ve seen a couple of incidents due to some misunderstanding but I guess it’s not that common. I’ve never misunderstood what a pilot is saying. I’ve only flown local flights around Europe but the sound quality of the PA was absolutely fine

Pilots learn how to talk on radio, which generally requires talking in a very quick concise way. Generally the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and people they are talking to on radio are expecting them to say certain things. Passengers in a plane however are very not used to this form of communication, and especially sitting in a plane full of distractions, it’s just hard to hear what they say. Not sure how true this is but I swear I heard something last week about how commercial pilots in the 50s tried to sound like Chuck Yeager when they spoke, and it just caught on/became a thing pilots do. Funny, I was on a 32 yo Fokker 100 a few weeks ago and thought about how crisp and clear the sound and speakers were when the pilots and FA gave an announcement. Seats were better too – enjoyed the more sofa style seats. I usually understand them loud and clear. Maybe you’ve been unlucky and been on a lot of flights with blown speakers or something, I don’t know. 🙂
A major factor is that most pilots aren’t familiar with or taught proper microphone technique. We typically use a handheld mic for PAs and I’ve witnessed many of my colleagues either holding the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and mic too close to their mouths which results in a lot of pops and plosive sounds or they will speak too quietly / with the mic too far away. Couple this with a noisy environment, lack of attention from passengers and a less than stellar speaker system in the cabin and this is your result. I normally monitor the PA channel when I speak and will speak more slowly / slightly lower than usual to make it obvious what I’m saying. Cabin crew have commented on this working well when we’ve had to issue safety related instructions to passengers.

Some information about Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt
They are all mimicking the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and Chuck Yeager Voice, which is extremely relaxed in tone by nature, making it harder to understand than even a regular tone. And to that last point (having been in at least one semi-emergency on an airplane), I can assure you that if they want to be understood over the PA, they will be understood. Or on airlines where they crack jokes (like Southwest) they are more clearly understood because they are trying harder. Pilots when getting into a new aircraft will adjust the headset output to their liking, volume wise, as are all the other pilots on the receiving end. ATC is doing the same when they sit down at their station. The one end user not getting a volume adjustment is the PA output. When pilots setup their headset/mic, it’s tailored to communicating via radios and the intercom for the pilot next to them. I have yet to find a pilot who does a mic check to see how loud it is coming over the PA. When the pilot gives an address over the PA, it’s often times with the door closed, so there’s no real feedback for how loud/quiet it is coming over the PA. One could be extremely loud, quiet, garbled, or clear and there’s no feedback for the pilot to hear how their are being perceived by the passengers.
We have a couple of mic options to use. Our headsets, which contrary to some of the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and comments is not a cheap mic. (Usually a $1200 Bose headset) or the aircraft’s mic (also not cheap, but something we rarely use). The input sensitivity between these two mics also differ. The aircraft mic picks up all sorts of noise, including that muffled breathing and reproduces those ummm hhhhhhtck uhhhhhs quite well while our headset mics filter a lot of that garbage out. Also, those announcements are… well… kinda lame. You’ve heard everything repeatedly over and over “welcome aboard flight 1234 to that one place… flight time… yadda yadda” and pilots are supposed to say it. About the only thing pilots get to contribute that you haven’t heard a million times from the gate to your seat are the ride conditions. We talk about the weather to break it up but if you’re just learning about the weather where you’re going, how did you pack for the trip?
So yeah, no feedback to how we sound, same message, and honestly focused on the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and real job and those messages become fodder. There’s a lot of wrong answers in here and I haven’t seen what I believe is a huge contributing factor so here it goes: 99% of what pilots say every single day is routine, and there’s almost a legally binding formula for how that communication is going to go at different parts of the flight… Aircraft radio communication is largely a bunch of people talking to each other who know EXACTLY what the person talking to them is going to say (before they say it) and EXACTLY what they’re going to have to say back, and then EXACTLY what they say in response. And once you’ve done that a thousand times, then you don’t have to enunciate your words perfectly, heck, you barely have to enunciate at all. And so what ends up happening is that pilots and ATC speak quickly and only enunciate enough so that the other experienced person on the other end understands the tiny variations in the call. So that’s how they speak 99% of the time. So that’s how they speak to you.
I think a major part of it is that the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and crew don’t know how or use a microphone. One should speak across the mic, not into it. not only this but they cant hear themselves back ever like singers, podcasters and livestreamers can, so they never learn to use a microphone either. They just keep raising their voices and redlining the input gain. It depends on how they’re configured and how the people speak into them. I travel often for work and deal with United, Air Canada, and American mostly. Sometimes I can’t hear anything, sometimes I can hear them over my noise cancelling earbuds clear as day. They are cheap, though. The sound more like radio communication that a simple mic/speaker. Most of the planes are very old, and their PA systems have not been updated because airlines want to squeeze every dime out of a plane.
The same is true for any public space, including the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and airports themselves, train stations, subway stations, sports arenas, etc…you name it. Despite what lots of other people have said, it’s not anything to do with the audio system being “cheap” or the airline not wanting to spend the money to make it better. 1- the Mic and the audio system are designed first and foremost to allow the pilot to communicate clearly and effectively with air traffic control. They are not listening on speakers in the same plane but rather on headphones on the other side of a radio transmission. This means that the audio is captured and processed to make that sound as clear as possible. 2- (And this is the biggest reason by far) The pilot is just not trying that hard to make this announcement clearly. They are speaking quickly, just basically doing a mental checklist of things they need to say except out loud. They also are not as careful about waiting a half second after turning the mic on/off and so words get clipped.
You’ll notice if the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and pilot is actually trying to communicate something other than a routine announcement they speak more slowly, a little bit louder, and they are careful not to clip words turning the mic off. It’s the same thing with the flight attendants and their mic. During the safety announcements despite their training, they are sort of just plowing through the script they’ve said hundreds of times before. On a recent flight heading out I couldn’t understand a thing the pilots said. On the way back, they were clear as day. The difference was the first plane was older and all the speakers sucked. I couldn’t even hear the entertainment system over the airplane noise on that one. There is a lot of extra noise in the cabin, AND on the flight deck. What is coming through the speakers is garbled by both.
Those speakers are often old as hell and as one of the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and least important things on the plane, not going to be replaced anytime soon. I barely give any information anymore. Y’all all have smart phones. Weather at the destination? It’s on the app. I’m telling y’all about turbulence, time remaining, any delays, and the gate assignments. I’m only giving y’all the information that you can’t easily access yourself. I give a lot more information if the wifi is out. My impression is that loudspeaker technology, as a whole, is just not very good, for a species that can land people on the Moon. That said, it’s been getting better. I think the interesting question here is why cabin crew make far more comprehensible announcements (which they do, in my experience), and I think this may have something to do with language skill disparity. My impression is that cabin crew usually have a higher level of English, while pilots… well, I guess they must speak it as well, given that it’s needed for AtA/AtG communication, but in my experience, they are just worse at it – they have stronger accents, they are less fluent, etc. Cheap headsets? My brother flies for a major. Idk what they’re issued but he spent a lot of time raving about the Bose set that he bought recently. A good set costs over $1k.
I have a sensory processing disorder and find that it’s almost impossible for me to make out what someone says if there is background noise. Im guessing the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and loud noise of the plane drowns out enough to make it more difficult for your brain to pick out familiar sounds. My problem is how my ears behave on flights. My ears halfway in or out of popping makes my hearing ‘blurry’ lol. I always fear I’m missing something important. I’m surprised, in this day and age, that there isn’t a more accessible form of communications. You’d think at least the planes with seatback screens would provide closed captioning for hearing impaired travelers. I think they hire them for their flying skills, not their radio voices. As long as ATC knows what they are saying it’s all good.
Retired airline pilot. I hated chatty pilots. I was a MD-88/90 captain for the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and last 15 or so years. No screens or anything but what I would do is talk to them briefly at the gate before pushback so I knew they had a good chance of hearing me. I’d tell them any important stuff and I would always tell them I was NOT going to bother them enroute unless something came up like having to turn the seatbelt sign on for rough air or anything unusual. If I did have to make an enroute PA I would call the FAs and ask if they could hear me. Some guys loved to hear themselves talk though. Tbh I hear the announcements better with noise cancelling headphones on. They cut out all the engine and ambient noise but the voice is somehow still audible.
I’ve seen a video of a pilot answering this question. Basically it is very loud in the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and cockpit so the mic is set on low sensitivity, so they basically have to eat the mic for it to pick up anything. If you put a microphone right at your lips you’ll sound like a pilot. Also the headset quality often is apparently rather poor. two main things, the first is that an airplane is a contained space of hard material, which easily bounces Soundwaves back and forth. so even with people talking in whispers, shuffling their bags, as such, it can still create a rather loud background noise. the second is that what they’re saying isn’t really that important. they know this, and so does the airline. so why bother spending, say, $5000 on a good PA system when a $2000 one is functional? Finally, the pilots aren’t selected because of their ability to enunciate. many announcements sound blurred together because the pilot is speeking fast with little enunciation. and they do this because speaking to the passengers is simply a tradition and formality.
Boeing and Airbus are responsible for the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and coms systems. What the fuck do you expect, like they’d suddenly become competent? It’s probably not OP’s problem, but all pilots are required to speak in English to international air traffic control, and it seems that they often only learned a few necessary words and are not really understandable. I really don’t have this problem and my hearing isn’t even very good. Was just on a flight Friday and the announcements were clear as a bell (although the pilot accidentally gave us the Palm Beach temperature rather than the NYC temperature, which was disappointing). A lot of trains, especially older ones, have this problem too and I’d say it’s worse than on planes, especially since the train lines like this often have poor signage along the platforms and lack monitors showing where you’ve stopped. When you can’t see one of the two or three signs along the platform or make out the garbled announcement, it’s a problem.
Costs, nobody giving a shit in terms of numbers (switching to airlines/paying more for better pilot chatter) and the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and pilots are not (and there’s no need for them to be) radio hosts with training on vocalization and voice projection via microphone. I do like to listen to the instructions and procedures in case we crash and survive… But tbh I’d rather listen to my music or whatever shitty movie they’re displaying and ask the flight attendant later than try to play comm officer deciphering the enemy radio chatter. My SIL is a commercial pilot. He went and bought a top of the range headset that is made for Airbus, better mic, and a noise canceling feature. So yes, std Airbus headsets are shite You mean those airplanes that still have ash trays? Even though we are not allowed anymore to smoke for the last 30 years or so? Weird.
Because they’re still trying to figure out how to keep the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and doors from blowing off, then they’ll investigate the intercom. Do you have any high frequency or low frequency hearing loss? I have never really had any trouble, not like public transit trains, where the speakers are paid for by as little tax money as they can get away with. The pilot is wearing a headset. The microphone on the headset is designed to cancel noise in much louder aircraft. The microphone is designed to communicate to the copilot and to air traffic control, the latter over a bandwidth-constrained FM link. Copilot and ATC are both wearing headsets for optimum listening clarity. If you’ve ever talked over a landline, you’ll recall they were a bit tinny- bandwidth was low, so they omitted everything below 300 or above 3000 hertz. Same thing here. Now, when the pilot chooses to communicate with the cabin, they are using the same microphone. They could pull out a separate high-definition microphone specifically for the cabin, but why bother? The flight attendants have got better microphones for the actual important stuff like the safety briefing.
I think they deliberately don’t turn the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and sound up very high on the PA system. I was on a flight recently where they announced someone was allergic to nuts and not to eat them, and for that announcement they cranked the sound up really loud and it was really clear. I just had a flight. With my earbuds in, I could hear the pilot pretty clearly. Without them, all I could hear was the plane. Just too much noise from the plane itself, I think, it overwhelms the ears. Remember that an airplane is about 5 million individual parts flying in loose formation, all provided by the lowest bidder. Airlines cut money where they can. A PA system, while nice to have, is much less important than say the back-up hydraulic pump.
It’s also a case of diminishing returns. Yes you could install a high-priced super-duper PA system…and it would still sound like crap trying to compete with all the Assumption University 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Champions shirt and by the same token and other ambient sounds on a passenger aircraft. Idea: transcribe that shit onto everyone’s screen in real-time. Auto transcription is really not that hard these days and should be pretty easy to get onto the screens. Although, that might break the security barrier between the communications array and the entertainment system. But there must be a one-way analogue they could wire from the comms to the entertainment safely. I mean. It already sends a “pause for announcement” signal somehow, I assume safely. Hell, do it in whatever language the user has selected on the screen when they sat down too. Airline native language above, then user-language below. Not to be funny but I guarantee you will understand if the pilot ever comes on the loud speaker and quickly says, “Braceforimpact!”
