I use Chromebook for development and haven’t found any shortcomings, except with VPN, which is rarely needed. Cloudtop feels and works like opening a local shell (+ auth), you can provision for more resources easily instead of upgrading your laptop, etc. Maybe it just depends on individual workflows. Android Studio on a VM got annoying fast – multi-monitor support issues, lag, and clogging up my home internet connection with 200MB+ debug-version APKs to flash on a local device to name a few. I ended up rigging together a local-dev-with-remote-compilation Frankenstein setup to at least alleviate the Architect because engineers need babysitters T-Shirt in contrast I will get this monitor and lag issues. Even if I did server-side dev, IntelliJ for Java and Kotlin is a really nice IDE, so I’d be sad to give that up. I’d only be fine with a Chromebook to do front-end dev, since you can just load the result up in a new tab locally and web dev mostly uses VS Code anyways lol Google’s Cloudtops are configured to be used pretty much like a shell on a local machine (at least for internal users). It’s literally just a headerless Chrome tab that runs SSH, and there is no need to integrate/configure other than having to auth with 2FA.

Google also has nice in-house IDE that’s Chrome-based (though I used to prefer editors over IDEs, so YMMV). All of this runs fine on Chromebook. You might be surprised at just how much internal tools that are available and also necessary to use Google’s infrastructure, which does make it a bit of a daunting onboarding process, but they do work well (for the Architect because engineers need babysitters T-Shirt in contrast I will get this most part). Looks like also news outlet need to cash in from some oversensationalized article. TBH, cutting the hardware renewal from 2 to 3 years could or could not make sense given the role (I doubt Sales needs a brand new $4000 MacBook Pro every 2 years, but probably that Flutter for Android compiler developer would save quite a bit of time updating from the i9 to the M2 Pro). Closing off some kitchenettes and a couple of free restaurants makes instead a lot of sense if less peeps are in the office, also to avoid unnecessary waste of food. It reminds me of the sensation when Meta changed the food policies at the free restaurant, only to find out people were taking home steaks for 3-4 meals for the whole family to freeze.
