Got rejected in Busan more times (from restaurants) than my 5 years in Japan. I don’t remember being rejected at all despite being a raw gaijin at the Anthony Volpe New York Y Rough American professional baseball shortstop T-Shirt it is in the first place but beginning Lots of Russian travelers in Busan that have caused a ton of pain for hotels/bars/etc… much more hostile to white travelers due to that It’s basically the same thing the article is saying. They just have a blanket statement of no foreigners so they don’t have to deal with this or that. If you go in with a Korean, treatment always changes. Not in my experience, been rejected in Busan many times in a group with Koreans. They said the Koreans could come in but not the foreigners. I’ve been to Busan 3 times and it was the only time I’ve been rejected from entering places/businesses, and it happened every time lol. Hell, I even got rejected from THE WATER. Went for a normal swim when some guys on jet ski’s pulled up telling me to go back. Where I’m from I usually swim 100 meters or so from the shore, they wouldn’t even let me get past neck-high water lol. Ngl, I know Koreans can be very territorial and emotional about their city, but in my opinion as a foreigner, Busan seems pretty bad in that regard. Seoul has gotten to the point where no one even really cares if you’re a foreigner, which is how it should be in any large/international city. Wait, so you tried to swim beyond the buoys and the lifeguards told you to go back? Bro, they do that to everyone. There’s a swimming zone at the beach, no one can swim past it. I don’t know, I didn’t see anything and there weren’t even any people at that specific beach at the time. It’s a dumb thing to try to regulate especially onto people who can clearly swim. It’s at your own risk, that’s common knowledge in any country. Water is too dirty closer to the shore, plastic and other shit washes up there so most people who swim tend to go 50-100 meters offshore. Either way generally the water has to be deep enough to where you can’t stand, otherwise you risk into getting scraped by a rock or something, and they stopped me way before that point

Hearing about these rejections is so odd (not that I don’t believe it)…but I’ve lived here with my family for almost 10 years and don’t think I’ve ever been refused service…except by a few taxi drivers early on. It’s wild how everyone’s experiences can be so different. You havent looked hard enough. There are definitely places that dont allow foreigners regardless of language ability. That’s your experience, and that’s great! I was in Seoul multiple times for various lengths of time and I only had one experience where it was clear I wasn’t welcomed. That being said, I had a friend from Europe come to Korea, and her experience was awful. She was told she was welcomed at various establishments, she called me asking how I could like a place that is so mean to foreigners. She had a rough time. It varies for everyone. Exactly.
