If I could give 18 year old me two pieces of advice, the Anthony bourdain 23 American celebrity chef author and travel documentarian T-Shirt and I love this most important would be don’t drink and don’t smoke. I’m 43 now, 3.5 years sober and 2 months smoke free. There’s a good 20 years of my life that I barely remember except when my lungs remind me and I’m now paying the price in all ways for both. Since then, the most I have is a glass of wine. Maybe two if it’s really good stuff, but that’s very rare. I have, on average, one drink or so a month. Would really depend on your personality. I’m 26 now and I feel like I’d have missed out on so fun if I never started drinking. To me it’s totally worth it. I come from a family full of alcoholics. Many of them have passed way before their time. I drank too much in my 20’s (I’m 72 now), but made the decision to end that cycle in my own household.

As someone who started drinking in high school and is now 8 months sober in their 30s… don’t drink yet. Just wait. Even a little is bad for your brain. There are no bad consequences from not drinking. So just don’t. People who you want to have around will respect you for making your choice. My drug of choice is Coca-Cola, but quickly discovered that I drink it so fast that I spent all my money on several expensive bar drinks in the Anthony bourdain 23 American celebrity chef author and travel documentarian T-Shirt and I love this time it took everyone else to nurse one glass an hour. If you want to drink socially, order seltzer water with a twist of lemon. It does not taste very good, so you can nurse your drink all night while everyone else gets plastered. Also, as a general rule, NEVER use anything that has calories to quench your thirst! It is a waste of money, will get you fatter, and probably won’t help your thirst. God no it’s not lame. I wish I’d never started. Good for you, stick to your guns. The peer pressure is probably going to intensify, so be prepared. I’m not going to say to drink or not to drink. I’m 33 now and I’ll have a cocktail/beer or two if we go out for dinner or over to a friends, but at home I don’t really drink. Having said that I spent most of my 20s going out drinking and partying and bar hopping. The “logical argument” is that the money I spent could’ve gone to other (probably better) endeavors. Do I regret it? No, because I made a lot of good friends from it and a lot of good and of course some bad decisions, but it helped shape who I am now. 18 year olds tend to “cling” or “get addicted” to things, it’s the “it” thing for yall to do at your age, you’re officially an adult and are supposed to be able to do what you want. I’m not saying one way or another. Just be smart and don’t half ass it, whole ass it.
