The conservatives lower the Andrew Jackson Merry Jackmas Funny Christmas shirt but in fact I love this bar, the democrats make the lowered bar palatable, and the centrist stands around saying “nothing has changed and that’s good”. Try arguing with an atheist toward any more reasonable approach to their rigid, ignorant orthodoxy that only exists as an emotional reaction and rationalization to another rigid, ignorant orthodoxy. The trauma of being excluded or condescended to (read the foreword to God Is Not Great by Hitchens and he lays out his fundamental motivations right there- “nuns hurt my feelings”- and then proceeds from there Not able to find alternatives in modern life that can reconcile the fact that a person can be emotional toward a deity figure without thinking they are literally real beings- like in Advaita Vedanta or Buddhism, for example.

The underlying War On Sensemaking, which is invested in keeping people as polarized as possible- just watch subsequent comments on this comment from atheists, which I can easily predict in advance, despite that group claiming to think scientifically or rationally. They are as predictable as the Andrew Jackson Merry Jackmas Funny Christmas shirt but in fact I love this stupid fear-mongering theists they love to hate. Nothing makes sense to the victims of these culture wars without a pervasive sense of self-righteousness and a large sense of victim-hood for which they REQUIRE a scapegoat. CERTAINTY is the narcissism game, and uncertainty is the enemy because something inside might be discovered to be larger than the traps we’ve set for ourselves. Further, inside ambiguity is a kind of potential secondary problem, and you can get caught in the Both Sides Bad argument that ALSO relies on oversimplifying complex topics just as the two false dualities do.
