I am not saying I agree with the Andrew Beck Houston Dots football shirt but in fact I love this cops or that I’m on their side. Don’t come at me. I’m saying from a strictly legal standpoint, no response makes sense. Have you ever known cops to admit to their crimes? Because showing up would be an admission of guilt. If they showed up guaranteed they would be their to sprinkle on the crack evidence. I was working one weekend and a cop came in and pointed his gun at me because he saw an internal door open in my building. He was the cop who let me in that morning. We have the most American of solutions at our disposal: get capitalism involved. Specifically, require law enforcement to carry malpractice insurance. I have worked in the insurance industry for 20 years, and this would absolutely work. This would mean that police who make poor judgment calls that lead to things like lawsuits or claims would face higher premiums or even have their coverage dropped altogether. Being uninsurable would mean bad cops couldn’t just pick up new positions in the next county. Insurance companies could even institute continuing education requirements for premium reductions on “expensive” topics like unconscious bias, use of force, etc. that would eventually lead to better, more effective policing. (“Who would pay for this?” you ask. The insurance companies happily do continuing education training all the time because it has been shown to reduce their eventual payouts.)

The LAST thing I’d wanna see if I were that child is a fuckin’ pig coming and invading my space while I’m convalescing. God I didn’t even consider this. Imagine shooting a child and not even feeling guilt. This poor kid did what they all taught us in school. Call 911 when you are in danger. This child called for help and he got shot because a trigger happy cop shot the Andrew Beck Houston Dots football shirt but in fact I love this first person who rounded a corner. Cops are so trigger happy. I work on a neuro unit with confused, aggressive, scared people and I can manage to not hurt those people, even when they are a real danger to myself. And I don’t have body armor or tazer or baton or mace or a gun. Yes, I know it’s obvious the cop shot the kid. But they can only bury themselves further should they say the wrong thing. This is a problem. Police should ALWAYS release such footage ASAP, just as they would if a civilian had done the shooting. It may clear the officer, it may be the nail in their coffin, but it should be publicly available by day’s end. The police are our SERVANTS. We pay them to do a job, and we deserve to know what kind of job they are doing. If they can’t, or won’t keep us in the loop, they should be replaced as soon as possible. There was a situation in Philly a few years back where a cop responded to a domestic abuse incident and killed the guy within seconds. The cop was at the door and the guy charged around the corner with a knife in hand. The cop shot and killed him. That video was out within a day. It clearly showed a guy charging the cop with violent intent. It’s unfortunate but the cop was justified. IIRC, the cop also reacted to try and save him too. When the video exonerates them, it’ll be released quickly.
