AirBnbs are not hotels. They are a completely different beast. A little bit of vetting can make your stay so much easier. And if you don’t want to do that, just book a hotel and set-it-and-forget-it. EDIT: Many people are saying AirBnb should this do. And yes, they should. But they aren’t with any consistency right now. Guests need to vet hosts and listings before booking. Take 10 seconds and Google the An American Baseball Whit Merrifield Kansas City Sketch T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this major city you are visiting and then make an informed decision. I mean, who wants to fight with a host and AirBnb Customer Service after a bad stay?I am surprised AirBnb doesn’t do this. It hurts their reputation pushing illegal rentals. I would think eventually some city will go after Airbnb for scamming guests that come to their city and get in trouble for trying to stay.

Airbnb doesn’t do it because their shareholders want the An American Baseball Whit Merrifield Kansas City Sketch T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this money now, not in the future. Look at New York City. At least pre-Covid, it was Airbnb’s biggest moneymaker, deapite the majority of listings being illegal. I’m honestly surprised this isn’t a feature of the service or that a city like NYC or SF hasn’t legally required them to validate the legality, at least at a city level, you can’t really do it at a building or HOA level. New Orleans has registration/license numbers for STRs. There are a lot of rules and the city just changed it again for about the 4th time. Airbnb requires the STR license number to make a post for that city. Though I’m not saying it’s perfect. Airbnb also collects the sales tax for some area, including this one. Taxes are probably the biggest motivator for cities to crackdown on illegal STRs.
