Is it a bit more work for us this way? Yep. But I dont think it’s for me to tell other humans what they like and don’t like. Unless your kids have legit nutritional/growth issues then I see no point in trying to control food. You’re arguing then up for food issues later on, IMO This happened to me. That’s cool, next time you are hungry, you get to eat the food from this plate, but I assure you, right now is the best it’s ever going to taste. Kids aren’t great at making decisions, so you’ve got to make some of them for them until they figure it out. I’m not making them eat a ridiculous portion, just the equal portion as whatever it was they want to eat. My stepmother used to do exactly what you described. It was terrible being forced to sit at the table for hours because I didn’t finish her nasty cooking. A few times my dad would just throw it out the back door and say I finished it. I didn’t understand it then and as an adult I still don’t understand why she did that. Thankfully I only visited my dad every other weekend and my mother never expected us to eat when we weren’t hungry.

And to get their money’s worth. My parents raised us this way. Not as dramatically as described but we were expected to finish our plates before leaving the table. It came from how they were raised. My dad’s family in particular was pretty poor, and a balanced dinner was a luxury. His parents were pretty offended if they didn’t want to eat it. “Starving kids in China” and all that. One of the big downsides to forcing kids to finish their plate is that they learn not to pay attention to the “full” signal from their stomach and instead overeat. That leads to being overweight. I grew up overweight as did my siblings. My wife and I knew better when our daughter came into the world. We do not make her finish her plate. However, we do expect her to sit with us until we are done, and to not forego dinner just so she can snack on junk later. We also pushed her to be more flexible about what is served for dinner, and not just insist on her favorite things, which tend to be less healthy options.
