You better be finding something else for my kid to do besides making money for you. I can be there everyday, I ain’t even a broke bitch anymore. I give my kids’ parents 5 days worth of artwork once for free every week. Or more if they are behind on pickups. I just sent home of bunch of colored shapes today. On Monday, they’re getting the leaves they colored in various mediums. So if my child wants their own art, they can’t have it? Wtf is this!? And which trash receptacle does it end up in if I don’t buy it? Gtfoh I don’t think it can be considered a donation on the parents part. They can purchase the art and then the school can donate that money but don’t come at me with a mandatory minimum payment and call it a donation on my part when I’m receiving something in return for the money. I worked at an elementary school for a while and was one of the lowest paid positions and was regularly asked to donate via emails/texts/fliers/in person. For bridal showers, going away parties, retirement parties, etc. at the end of the year the support staff put on a luncheon for the teachers and they went around and asked everyone for $20 donations and marked their name off the staff list they made and hounded people who hadn’t donated towards it yet. I worked in the wealthiest school district in my entire state. It was goddamn baffling. My response when I was ambushed was that I needed that $20 for gas to get myself to and from work, pretty quick way to get them to shut up and just wish I said it sooner.

This is about as inequitable as can be. Paying to wear costumes and for artwork? I’ve been teaching for almost 30 years and have never heard of such a thing. The fall fundraiser I can understand as many small schools don’t have the American Grown African Roots Usa Flag Black History Month T-Shirt in addition I really love this budget for such amenities. My school years ago had a similar idea, and at $1, it’s hard to be mad at that. BUT the balls to hold kids’ artwork hostage in exchange for donations is definitely up there for scummy fundraising tactics. That’d I’d be angry about, and my dad as a scrapbooker probably would have killed someone when I was a kid if they tried that. I know minors don’t technically have all the same rights as adults, but isn’t there at least some modicum of copyright/theft concern here? Like sure legally (in the US at least) everything a child “owns” is actually owned by the parents, but if a kid wanted to take it home without complication and the teachers hold it for ransom…a case for this wouldn’t go anywhere obviously but I don’t think they can do that.
