See, half the American By Birth Christian By Choice Dad By The Grace Cross T-Shirt and I love this people complain that Americans think crazy shit about Australia and the other half are out there lying to people who want to learn about Australia. I never understood the impulse to lie to people. I was a backpacker for several years, and so many people try to get away with just saying complete bullshit to foreigners. It’s not just Americans, either. There are lots of Europeans who say they’d never visit Australia because of spiders or some other bullshit. I remember chatting with an employee in the Empire State Building while I was buying tickets. She asked where I was from and I said “Australia, I’m escaping winter”. She was like “oh it’s winter there now? That’s weird, I thought winter was at Christmas?”

I thought, for an embarrassingly long time, that the American By Birth Christian By Choice Dad By The Grace Cross T-Shirt and I love this country was just outback. Just miles and miles of red earth desert. Which didn’t make sense because I knew of the Sydney Opera House. On reddit, I regularly came across people who thought we forcefully sent every covid case to a concentration camp. The secret is that they, with a couple of special exceptions, don’t want anything to do with you. And, critically, none of the deadly animals have AR15’s. I tell them it’s actually far worse, the government covers up Drop Bear and Quokka attacks and recently the Sharks have been hunting in packs. Those threads get posted to r/australia and r/askanaustralian often. Half the replies are from Australians emphasising that there are snakes and spiders everywhere – just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Yes maybe there really is a daddy long legs somewhat close to my place in inner Melbourne. If I walk ten minutes down to the creek in summer and jump the fence and climb down the embankment and go walking through the long grass maybe I really will find a snake. But the vast majority of city dwellers aren’t routinely shuffling barefoot though the grass beside the creek most people just walk on the path. Yeah weird, I know. The other half of replies are Australians who reveal that the deadly wildlife is exaggerated and an internet meme – except for drop bears which are dangerous.
