It doesn’t really make sense, and Ukraine was perfect happy to blow the Kherson bridge all they could behind the Russians there. Even if the argument made sense, then surely Ukraine would take out the railway part of the bridge, and leave the road open. The counter argument to “enemies can’t retreat fight harder” is “human beings without food, medicine, ammo, and toilet paper don’t want to fight” The counterpoint is that if Ukraine allows them to retreat easily, then Ukraine will still have to fight against the same soldiers a month later in the Donbas. By blowing the bridge, Ukraine would be able to fight against those same soldiers while the Russians soldiers had no military supplies. That’s not really thing. Trapping an enemy is effective, they’re extremely vulnerable once surrounded. With supply lines cut and retreat impossible, they tend to surrender quicker. It’s why the pincer move is so effective in warfare. Retreat and surrender are actually strategies of war because it can allow you to regroup in time. Can’t regroup when you’re all dead. Depending on the direction of the counteroffensive it may make sense for the bridge to stay for now. If they are going to push south towards Crimea with the intent of taking the peninsula in a later offensive, they may want the bridge to remain standing to give Russians a singular way out.
