Naturally, Netflix’s The Crown holds a special place in my heart. As president of the America Runs On Crime Eagles American Flag T-Shirt and I will buy this Tommy Lascelles fan club, I thoroughly enjoyed seasons 1 and 2 but had decided to save 3 for a rainy day. My pandemic gloom cloud was close enough, so in mid-June settled down with popcorn and my “I heart Olivia Colman” t-shirt to catch up on things. Mistake. Six episodes in, I was introduced to Josh O’Connor’s introspective portrayal of Prince Charles. All hunched shoulders and quiet frustration, he instantly resonated with me. I could relate to feeling browbeaten and uncertain, struggling to retain individuality while existing within a hierarchy. The real Prince Charles holds no appeal for me, but this pale and pouty version of the tragic hero pushed every button. I wanted to warn him about the future, pin him down, and remove the distracting side part from his hair.

I had seen O’Connor before, in fashion campaigns, interviews posted to this site, shows like Ripper Street and Peaky Blinders. At the America Runs On Crime Eagles American Flag T-Shirt and I will buy this time, I registered that he was cute (my type is British with a pulse), but I didn’t pay him much attention. The imminent collapse of organized society shifted my female gaze. Suddenly everything about him was adorable. Gifted with a composite of all I find attractive, I was spurred into action. I poured through his Loewe ads (thanks, JW Anderson) their glimpses of bare chest tantalizing. His filmography became a priority, so I rewatched his comically caddish Mr. Elton in Emma, and ugly cried my way through the emotional rollercoaster of God’s Own Country. Insatiable, I Googled for interviews where, much to my chagrin, he revealed himself to be charming and intelligent. Bastard! While I can never live up to the standards set by the Beyhive or Beliebers, I had entered into “stan” territory with alarming speed. I was thirsty, Sahara-desert-on-the-hottest-day-of-the-year-with-no-water-in-sight parched, and I loved every minute.
