Not much. Funnily enough, most of the customers I have come across are polite and respectful. Few are borderline rude, and even fewer actually rude. Unfortunately, it’s the experiences with the rude customers that you remember the most. For every customer who treated me poorly and showed no respect, I can think of many others who were friendly, polite and respectful. My biggest bug bear is and has always been when people fail to say please or thank you. It’s something that’s expected in the UK culturally, so it always grates me when a customer doesn’t.

I’ll never understand how or why it’s not a universal expectancy for people to be kind to strangers in any situation, unless being mistreated. And is it just me or has it become more unrealistic of an expectation to be at a restaurant and NOT see someone treated unkindly (or simply completely overlooked as a human) in some way..? I was either living with rose tinted sunglasses my whole life, or in the past 5ish years or so, people have seemed angrier, and more likely to snap than before…nothing has changed for me except for experiencing severe illness at an age that was ripe for molding my values (21), so maybe it’s that since then (10 years ago but probably 6ish years since it changed me—or when I leaned into the changes and learned everything I could from the experience). So perhaps I have greater empathy for people than I did before? But I really don’t think that’s the case, as I remember having the same feelings when I was younger. I know there is a certain percentage of the world that isn’t really able to feel empathy, but it seems like the vast majority would treat people like they expect to be treated—if that were the case, we’d be living in a completely different world right now. I took psych classes in college but I guess I need a refresher on the % of people who for one reason or another don’t express gratitude. Perhaps childhood trauma has become more common, which would be an understandable explanation… Or maybe it’s just that I’m from Texas (a city who votes BLUE, just like all the other big cities in this state—where it’s common practice to make eye contact and say hi to strangers while passing on the sidewalk or a building…which after going to school in California I was surprised to find out it can be seen as abbbbnormal behavior hahahah).
