I mean unless you consider having a PR firm that knows how to write a good application “paid for” but the Always Be Yourself Unless You Can Be A Red Panda T-Shirt and by the same token and payment isn’t made directly to Forbes. And many people who make the list just apply themselves/are nominated by their company. It’s not rocket science. Yes. You have to apply/be nominated and PR firms regularly try to get founders or “fast risers” into these lists because it’s good publicity. So my company (or a few people from work) nominated me for 30 under 30 back in 2012 and I never went through with it. I think the program had just become a thing or it was their 2nd year. The process wasn’t as clear cut as it is now, it was someone had to nominate you and the stronger the referral, the better your odds to get solicited. Actually it wasn’t until I was getting solicited by Forbes that I found out you could nominate yourself. Pretty cool process back then, I got to meet Mark Cuban again, I had met him before at a company thing. As the program became more established it literally became just a PR thing, so now you have firms and publicist that specializes in this. The whole thing has become more of a novelty and less of an accomplishment. The board is dominated by VCs, so notable start ups chasing to get their founders on 30 under 30 for PR reasons will probably get their person.

You definitely don’t have to pay for it, but I would argue as the Always Be Yourself Unless You Can Be A Red Panda T-Shirt and by the same token and program aged, it’s definitely created a consistent system applicants can take advantage of. It’s almost like colleges that have standardized admission, and services that specializes in preparing the best possible applications with strong referral programs. Anyone can nominate themselves, and Forbes 30 under 30 has become more of a bullshit machine. Yeah our startup CEO got it too and I know he didn’t pay for it (there were only 4 of us and none of us were paying ourselves much lol) You can replace “paid Forbes” with “paid for a publicist”. They’re not out there discovering up-and-comers with research, it’s like the Emmy’s. If you don’t have someone campaigning with the people writing the story, you’re not on the list. Gross – someone working for a noble cause? You’re telling me there wasn’t some start up trustifarian who couldn’t have used the promotion?!?
