A senior should be able to rely on junior/mids to do the grunt work.. build the libraries/sdks so to speak, while the senior can use those to pull together the bigger picture. They have the title and pay, but most of the time I see jrs doing more work than seniors. I don’t agree with this take. I absolutely agree that leetcode is BS. But hiring people without seeing them coding at all is asking for trouble. I don’t trust your resume, and titles in this field are meaningless. There’s a ton of “seniors” with 2 years of experience nowadays. So I’m going to make you write some code because I want to make sure you can write logical and maintainable code, but I’m not going to make you solve puzzles or LC-style problems.

From a staff/principal engineer’s perspective in FAANG, I expect all my senior engineers to at least be able to recognize the nature of a problem and narrow the solution down to a few Algo/DS approaches. Then the implementation part shouldn’t even be a question. There are just too many new things to learn for new joiners to FAANG companies, and apart from soft skills, the only things that are 100% transferable are core CS and systems knowledge. If a senior+ candidate can’t even solve a LC medium in 30 minutes, I would highly doubt their ability to be able to ramp up. What you get tested on will change as you get more and more senior though. My last few jobs have emphasized systems design and soft skills a lot more than coding. I also find that the interviews at the staff+ level are more of a conversation than a specific “test” as well. At least at good companies this has been the case. I’ve gotten some really shitty interview questions before too though where it’s effectively just a trivia question.
