On an old MMO I was unable to make a male character who didn’t look like a boyband reject, a stereotypical lumberjack or trying to hard to be edgy. I ended up coming up with a female design I liked pretty quickly though and went with it. The MMO I play now is related to the previous one and I came over with the same group of players so I just made the same character. Sorry but what’s fun about that? In many games you have multiple characters that you can play separately. Does it sound fun to just have them all be the same? No that’s the opposite point of having multiple choices. In some games (Dungeon Fighter Online for example) certain skills/classes are gender locked. Ever in the game I mentioned, the Male & Female versions are played differently.

It’s funny because all of these answers are exactly what my one friend used to say back when she was still living as a boy in high school. Think about it this way as one opinion. If you are putting a large amount of time into a game, wouldn’t you create a character that are happy looking at? Another reason is because a lot of games have better customization for female characters and or better looking armors. For fighting games specifically I play a lot of female characters because they are fast. They fit my playstyle and are fun to use. DOA and MK I play several male characters such as Hayabusa, Reptile, Smoke, & Hayate. It all depends on which characters are the most fun to play. Setting aside the sex appeal answers some are giving, men in general get to see male characters in media a lot. Especially video games, which are still a male-targeted demographic in many ways. So there’s more “novelty” in playing as a female character; and that novelty wouldn’t exist, I don’t think, for female players deciding to play as male avatars.
