Everyone I know who dealt with them complain … selling or renting. They will inflate a valuation, just to impress you, and make their rivals look incompetent, and then, when your property isn’t selling, make excuses for reducing the price. Some estate agents, employ young people who think it ok to lie, and bullshit. They are not paid very much, the people that are top managers, make the real money. The bigger the brand, the more likely they are to employ bullshitters, and dodgy agents. Go for small, independent, local agents. Foxtons bought my local letting agent and immediately contacted me about visiting for a “valuation”. I phoned the landlord and asked if he had requested this, he had no idea what I was talking about. They had just decided to do it themselves. Foxtons then came round for like 3 minutes, and off the back of that advised the landlord to increase the rent by £900pcm. I just told him no we’re not doing that and he agreed. It did go up a bit, but it had remained static for several years anyway so no problem really. But really, almost a grand increase. 70% of their business is lettings…probably because they are shit at sales and have lost market share due to having such a poor reputation.

I can honestly say that dealing with hundreds of coked up, arrogant, rude foxtons agents screaming at me for free drinks was the worst night of bar tending I ever had. I walked out and still can’t walk past a Foxton office without shaking my head. Nobody on Reddit has a good thing to say about them and I can understand why. However, I have met a few rich wanker landlords over the years and they all say that when the other estate agents struggle to get tenants that are prepared to pay obscene amounts of money, Foxton’s always seem to be able to come up with the goods. I have no idea why or how. They sound proper shady. What they were doing is having a mortgage advisor and solicitors that they would recommend you to and then essentially collude with eachother. A customer would offer x amount on a property then the mortgage advisor would tell Foxtons they can afford more and try to push the customer above what they wanted to spend.
