In a patient chart I saw a pamphlet meant for children, explaining group homes. I looked in the patient’s chart. They were an adult sized teenager with a developmental behavioral syndrome that caused them to have violent outburst. They were taken to the emergency department during one (age 17) and after a 72 hour hold they were supposed to discharge. But no adult in their life would take them back (auntie or deadbeat dad, mother was deceased). The kid spent the remaining year at the hospital, took a special bus to their school. On their 18th birthday they were discharged to a group home.

As someone who was involuntarily hospitalized a number of times decades ago, it’s sometimes the very best thing that can happen. And frankly, some mentally ill people can never live independently. Other countries do better. Edit/follow-up: I’ve been doing some further reading on the NYC idea. It’s not ideal. As someone with a pretty serious mental illness who has been homeless/off my nut for years (two+ decades ago), I benefited greatly from involuntary hospitalizations. I can fairly say it’s probable that at least two of them saved my life—the last, and longest one of them being one month. I’ve stayed in homeless shelters, flea-bag/weekly “residential” hotels, and an assisted living psych shelter where a rare few were invited to stay for two whole years (gasp!). I made the cut, but was lucky enough instead to get back on my feet/back to work/meds, therapy, etc. More than anything, I was damn lucky. In any case, the real issue for homelessness … is not having a home. If you’ve got a debilitating mental illness and often concomitant substance abuse, you sure as shit can’t work, and I think society (me, you, us, everybody) should pay to house people who can’t take care of themselves.
