you should make friends that is not job/location dependent. I am in touch with most of my old co-workers. some from my very first job. It was really tough, but I wish I had done it much sooner. I had a deep connection with many people I worked with along with the product. It was pretty much my baby. Now at my new company, I’m making a lot more money and would literally leave in a heartbeat for a better opportunity. I have pretty much zero connection to my new place and hope to keep it that way. The sad fact is I was a high performer at my previous company and still got paid peanuts, despite my salary increasing by 166% while I was there. Junior engineers at my new company get paid as much as I was making when I left my previous company and it honestly kills me to think about. This is exactly my story – I was there for 8 years, everyone was nice, work was super interesting, built something from scratch but I was paid peanuts and I stayed far too long, missed the zirp bull run. Now I see very junior engineers make in year 1-2 in my current job that I made after 7-8 years, and yet complain about salary. I miss the connection, sometimes thought about going back for a few seconds, but the pay cut is not worth it, the interesting work is not worth it.

When you’re young, it feels like a big deal. This is natural. I’ve had over a dozen jobs at this point of my career, and I don’t even blink an eye. I was like this with a few jobs. Then I worked with some really crappy people (who seemed cool at the start). When I left I decided to only have professional interactions at my next job. Been that way ever since. I’m definitely polite/respectful and far from an asshole, but I’ve decided to not be friends with anyone I work with. Unless you know somebody is about to be harmed or that there is a crime people need to be aware of, we don’t need to talk about anything else except work. I don’t want to hear about any gossip, backstories with co-workers, etc. I’m only concerned with somebody’s specialty/role at the current company. I’m there to get better as an engineer, do my job then go about my day with no attachments.
