What matters to you is how good your hearing is. Sure, you might well be able to understand people just fine if they’re loud enough and close enough, but how much quieter do they sound? How good are they at reducing other noises that aren’t someone talking right near you? Oddly enough, if they’re doing a good job of blocking out background sounds then it’s quite possible that you’ll here someone close by better because you no longer have to filter out other things. Active noise cancellation only really affects constant, repetitive sounds (think motors, traffic, etc). Since it cuts those things out, it can actually make speech and other sounds easier to hear. Wearing noise cancelling headphones in an office made it harder for me to tune out other people, not easier.

At the end of the day I still want to donate these toys regardless as I think the kids are going to really appreciate them, but do you think I should just do this anonymously? It’s going to be difficult to donate them anonymously because of where the donation centre is at my workplace but I might be able to get away with it if I’m stealthy or get there super early (providing the doors are open). But theres definitely a chance someone will see me or guess it was me and no doubt this will spread around the office.
