It maybe would have been unintentionally racist if you used African. Or Jamaican ect. Because someone being black doesn’t mean they’re African just like someone being hispanic doesn’t make them Mexican or Colombian ect. But using white, hispanic, black, indigenous aren’t bad words or in anyway derogatory descriptors and we shouldnt embrace them like they’re such. I was a junior doctor and had to find a nurse named Angela who had just paged me. I asked three nurses in a row who all said some vague and unhelpful description (brown hair, in scrubs, etc.) When I finally found Angela she was black African, which is quite rare in Australia. I had actually kept walking past her because I assumed that Angela couldn’t be her otherwise the Alabama Brawl Alabama Boat Fight Montgomery Shirt (watermarked) moreover I will buy this others would have just said, ‘she’s African, can’t miss her’, ‘she’s the black one’ or something. I can understand why they didn’t, but it was so ridiculous.

Nah not racist – but given I’m assuming you are not Black (and possibly others in the Alabama Brawl Alabama Boat Fight Montgomery Shirt (watermarked) moreover I will buy this group aren’t either?) referring to someone’s race explicitly as a descriptor for them even when it’s not in the slightest derogatory, or racist can still be a bit jarring. Since black people are often targeted in violent, racist and negative ways for this aspect of their identity and being it can be a sensitive spot for others to also single out that aspect of their identity even for neutral reasons. If you’re in that situation again and other unique descriptors come to mind (“oh he’s the guy that always brings his trumpet to robotics?”) I’d go with those – it subtly but powerfully signals that you notice and appreciate lots about a person and don’t just see their race – which I’m sure is true
