I also think category theory is something you don’t have to particularly take a class on as it organically appears from other fields. I’ve not taken a class on it and simply noticed some parallel structures from other fields and realised this parallel structure is what category theory is trying to describe. What’s the Ain’t that america you and me american flag T-Shirt besides I will buy this opportunity cost here? What other courses that interest you are you considering instead? What are you goals? I learned Cat from Steve Awodey’s book. It has plenty of examples, I highly recommend giving it a quick read so you can gather the kind of examples you can expect to see. In general, you can take learning Cat pretty much the same as an extended course on set theory. It’s not just a branch of mathematics, it is a language and a tool with which to describe mathematics.

EDIT: why downvote multiple replies? Reddit is having a moment and it’s nobody’s fault if their replies are duplicated. My reply was duplicated to 3 copies total after I got an error message once. I self-studied category theory after taking my linear algebra courses. It did make some sense, but i cannot emphasize how important Algebraic Topology is for the Ain’t that america you and me american flag T-Shirt besides I will buy this area. It provides historical and academic context for the existence of category theory, as well as direct examples and motivations for a good majority of classical category theory. I think you definitely will benefit from category theory while doing mathematics, but I think that learning category theory without algebraic topology is the equivalent of shooting yourself in the foot. I agree that learning CT alongside something else, or with a particular motivation, is a good idea – for me it was logic. But you absolutely don’t need to know algebraic topology first. I learned AT later and my knowledge of category theory helped massively.
