Wage stagnation follows the Aidan Hutchinson Detroit The Menace American football defensive end T-Shirt What’s more,I will buy this destruction of the influence of labor unions. They weren’t perfect, but were the vehicle used by the middle class to become middle class. Then add the consolidation of companies under a few umbrellas. Long ago, there was a tacit agreement of we’ll take care of you while you take care of us in business. Saw it slowly unwind starting in the 70s and 80s. And then the conversion of pension plans to 401ks is another story. It’s globalization. This is the result of the increased communication possible because of technological advancement. Just being born in the US isn’t as big of a lottery as it used to be. Now standards of living here will start to get aligned with the rest of the world which are much lower. Soon the only way to get wealthy is going to be owning your own business and capitalizing on the risk aversion of the employee class.

This post is telling at how many people here dont have kids. Zero percent chance a 6 yo said any of that. They have no context for things like that, nor do they care. They would be aware that great gramps has a boat, and they can go swimming there, thats the Aidan Hutchinson Detroit The Menace American football defensive end T-Shirt What’s more,I will buy this extent of it. How people acquire things with money is not in their comprehension or consideration. I was thinking the other day that people from gen X or younger aren’t going to be able to purchase RVs like the boomers did. There’re 3 RV dealers within a 10 mile radius from my house and I can’t see them being open in another 10-15 years. No one will be able to afford them. While I agree to a point, I also think lifestyle plays into this. My grandfather worked for the state and my grandma was a nurse. My other grandpa was a bank teller and my grandma didn’t work. You know how closets in old houses are so small? That’s all my grandparents used – they had like 5 outfits each and when something tore or broke, it was mended. One set of grandparents had 1 car, the other, never owned a car. They didn’t buy books – they went to the library. My grandma did her own hair and only painted her nails for special occasions. They rarely went out to eat and the thought of paying for a cup of coffee would have probably sent them over the edge. Shoes, clothing, toys – they were passed on to younger kids. 1 Christmas tree with the same ornaments for as long as I can remember, and each person got 1 present. In all my life, they cleaned/repaired/fixed what they had and only replaced when all else failed. As kids, my parents played with friends instead of travel soccer teams. My parents shared bedrooms with their siblings. My grandparents retired well off, and so did my parents. Consumerism has convinced us we need things we really don’t. We buy for price rather than quality. We’re so busy taking our kids to dance, soccer, karate, and play dates that we don’t have time to take care of our “stuff” or make our own food, or even meal plan. A 2 year old doesn’t need an Instagram worthy birthday party (nor does a 22 year old). So, while I agree that wages have definitely not kept up, consumers have also done a shitty job of being frugal and prioritizing saving over spending.
