Yup, they were what we call “regular army” unit and had better training and equipment than “local army” unit and “guerrilla”. Can’t upvote this enough. This is not something someone can understand until they are there. I salute you, brother. Question: for this picture, or for any war for that matter with a similar scene….who cleans up or claims the bodies? Are they left there to rot or do families come and claim the bodies I will never understand how these people can walk through a jungle barefoot, or engage in battle barefoot.Humans are a warrior tribe. They love war. They’ve been doing it since day one and will be having war until the end of time. It’s in our DNA. Even housewives at COSTCO will actually fight over the last pack of toilet paper then go home and make a pie for the church bazaar. It’s what we are. Warriors. In almost 5, 640 years in recorded human history, there have been 14, 430 recorded wars with 2 wars averaging per year. All those wars were aimed to create peace. Despite all the celebrations of Valentines Day, Christmases, Ramadans, Olympics, human beings will always love to kill each other in the name of peace. You hit the nail on the head, the smell. I’m glad I never had to deal with jungle warfare, Afghanistan was crazy, but at least I wasn’t in a hot and steamy jungle.

They wanted body counts on the AARs or after action reports. What he says is true. Nobody can know who hasn’t experienced it. How can they? A narrative of events inevitably falls short. We used say to each other, “How would you ever explain this to somebody back in the World?’” That’s why the closest to understanding it is in poetry. And Platoon has the visual poetry to allow understanding of the war as close as it can be understood by people who were not there.
