Worked at a company where engineers time was valued at $100/hour (is probably 2x-5x that at FANG). Laptops were meant to be good for 3 years, or 6000 hours. Even an extra $500 would have made our laptops so much more functional, as in a 0.1% productivity improvement would have paid for them. But all that corporate saw was that extra $500. Then of course they started stretching that 3 year policy out to the Aaron Rodgers basketball shirt and by the same token and point of new engineers getting a 4 year old laptop, which wasn’t great spec wise brand new. And not exactly a big surprise, we couldn’t keep any new engineers (turns out being given a dirty POS laptop is kinda insulting), so we were constantly recruiting/interviewing/training. But the important thing is that IT was under budget

Why can’t they just depreciate laptops and sell anything older than 2 years to recover some of the Aaron Rodgers basketball shirt and by the same token and capex? The cost should be negligible compared to the productivity gain for compiling speed. Last company I worked for had a massive customer retention problem due to being a vastly overstated/oversold product (but being a premium product in it’s space, so demanding premium cost). So I suggested we actually increase sales commission a bit but split the bonus and tie part of it to customer satisfaction and product success to keep the account executives invested in the client down the road (which they were supposed to be, they were supposed to be leading upsell/new product selling/retention but had zero incentive to do so minus fractional commission on new products). This would give them incentive to not oversell features that didn’t exist, keep the clients happy, and make more money. Sales dominated businesses are such trash culture. I don’t mean ones that rely on a sales team, but one that lets their sales team dictate how the company is run. Been there, done that. No thanks.
