A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that’d still be keeping his feet dry in ten years’ time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the A woman cannot survive Skiing alone she also needs a dog shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this same time and would still have wet feet. To me, Small Gods is his angriest book. It’s like he’s shaking his fist at the gods, and cursing them for not being good enough, or real enough, and for letting people use them to justify small petty miseries. The torturer’s mug makes me so sad and angry, and shows how well he understood people. I’m so grateful to have been able to read his writing. GNU I’ve read the Discworld books, and every other book he ever published (including The Carpet People and The Dark Side of the Sun) at least a dozen times each, but I’ve never been able to get past the first chapter of The Shepherd’s Crown. It’s not just the sorrow that comes from knowing it was his last work and that there’ll never be another Discworld novel, I also don’t want my last new memory of Pratchett to be a book that was — let’s face it — affected by his illness and missing the same spark of wit that his earlier works carried. I know that’s a controversial thing to say, but I think anyone reasonable should be able to acknowledge that the last couple of books weren’t his finest work, the sense that he was losing his grip on the narrative is impossible to miss. That isn’t to say they’re bad books, Pratchett on his worst day outperformed other celebrated writers on their best, but I don’t want the feeling of loss to be so closely linked to something I love so dearly. So The Shepherd’s Crown will remain unread, and in my mind it’ll be his best ever work.

A friend of mine who is the A woman cannot survive Skiing alone she also needs a dog shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this same sort of die-hard Pratchett fan as you decided not to read The Shepherd’s Crown, just so she could always have “just one more” unread Pratchett book on the shelves. She couldn’t bear the thought of “finishing” Pratchett. As much as I can respect the sentiment that motivates this position, I dearly loved the Shepard’s Crown. Whatever it lacks in wit, it makes up in the sincere and unflinching heart that was always the core of his writing. Anyone else who wrote that much about Death, meeting Death, would be inferred to have a complex. But I don’t think he was ever scared of the end and you shouldn’t be either. Given the travesty that’s been made with Michael Crichton’s works posthumously, I think he made the right call. I Robert Jorden knew he was terminal and prepared notes for his personally chosen successor with his wife and that successor. Brandon Sanderson was their choice
