Try opening a huge assembly in Inventor or Solidworks when your IT department skimps on hardware. Sometimes it would load for an hour or so and then just crash, all because we were running 10 year old PCs with 2022 software. Multiple engineers doing nothing for several hours every day because we, as a company, don’t want to update our PCs? At over $200 per engineering hour I am sure we spend $6-700 per day for 6 engineers to sit and wait for files to open. Oh, Windows wants to update. I wouldn’t want to run an outdated OS so I guess I’m updating my OS today. And that’s all I’m doing. I had a job as an intern where in the A Girl And Her German Shepherd A Bond That Can’t Be Broken wing shirt in other words I will buy this first half year I would click on the browser icon, walk down to the canteen, get a coffee and a sandwich, chat/flirt with the cashiers a bit, eat the sandwich, drink the coffee, walk back up to the office and maybe the browser would be open. Walking over dollars to pick up pennys. That’s just what companies do. The dealer I work at said our drum of brake cleaner was too expensive, so they proceeded to spend thousands more on cases of cans. Took them awhile before someone did some basic math.

Worked at a company where engineers time was valued at $100/hour (is probably 2x-5x that at FANG). Laptops were meant to be good for 3 years, or 6000 hours. Even an extra $500 would have made our laptops so much more functional, as in a 0.1% productivity improvement would have paid for them. But all that corporate saw was that extra $500. Then of course they started stretching that 3 year policy out to the A Girl And Her German Shepherd A Bond That Can’t Be Broken wing shirt in other words I will buy this point of new engineers getting a 4 year old laptop, which wasn’t great spec wise brand new. And not exactly a big surprise, we couldn’t keep any new engineers (turns out being given a dirty POS laptop is kinda insulting), so we were constantly recruiting/interviewing/training. But the important thing is that IT was under budget
