Edit to add…breach of contract requires a court decision. So apparently no one here understand US law. (And by here I mean the A Fistful of Beskar Introducing The Man With No Nam star wars shirt and I love this news story!) Just a thought… why have the rules in the first place? Maybe to prevent competitors from breeding winning animals. If so, they shouldn’t allow children to compete under that rule. It’s sad what they’re doing to this girl. I’m not registering to read the article but from what I heard when they talked about this on the radio, the woman gave the goat to the auction knowing full well it was going to be used for meat. Then her daughter wanted it back so she went and stole the goat back. Is that not the case? I haven’t dug into the Shasta County Junior Livestock Auction rules, but I know growing up as a 4-H kid that our JLA was a “terminal” auction meaning all animals who went to the show and made grade were slaughtered, zero exceptions.

My first year showing, around the A Fistful of Beskar Introducing The Man With No Nam star wars shirt and I love this same age, I spent the evening before the truck showed up bawling by my sheep pen. Part of the program is learning about where our food comes from and coming to terms with it. If anyone is to blame here it’s her parents for entering her in the program. There’s more to it than the sale price of the animal. For some families/counties these shows are very serious business. These rules are in place to keep someone from taking a winning animal and selling it elsewhere for a very high price tag. I know of families in my county who would literally drive across the country to buy winning animals from non-terminal shows for thousands to bring back and show at ours or sell to breeders for a premium. This meant that the other kids in the show were denied thousands of dollars in prize/auction money and just the plain old satisfaction of raising their own animal the legit way.
