Incentivizing marriage is incentivizing the procreation of more taxpayers. (Or at least, that’s the intent.) You’ve literally been able to do this for over a century. You go before a judge, they say ‘Congrats, you’re married’, you pay the fee, sign the paperwork before a couple witnesses (they’ll even supply them if you dont have any), and voila, you’re off to Disneyland or wherever. Seems more about not wanting to have a grand wedding but feeling pressured to do so because it is expected of you and then blaming society for that. Pretty cheap and hassle free compared to the big ceremony bs. Just have a nice vacation, and you’re good to go. Naa… Weddings are the best. A fantastic party, everyone is happy to be there and enjoying every second of it. BUT you have to do it right. Do not invite everybody just because “you have to”. It is your party and you can choose who do you want to be there. It can be small-ish and by that it gets cheaper. The only important expenditures are someone (or a group) to take care of the music and a photograph (can be a friend with that hobby) because these are memories you will want to keep.

You also have to have friends whom you actually like which seems to be a major point of confusion for most of reddit. You do you, and let everyone else enjoy their time? Why? Missing the point. Everyone can do what they want and no one will bat an eye. It’s about making a simple ceremony—or not being married at all—more accepted as a norm. It’s about adjusting expectations. I’m not xtian by any means, but to me, the celebration (not the ceremony) was always for the family and/or friends – the people who were there for you for the steps of your life. There are many who would want to see you want to take one of the biggest steps, and in my mind, celebrating the choice of a life partner is not only one of the biggest ones, but also a big milestone in saying “goodbye”, since most of my friends at least, have grown more distant since getting married. Kinda like how at a certain point birthdays are just for making everyone else feel like they’re doing something nice for me rather than doing anything I actually want to do. Feels more like a chore than a celebration. The “celebration” should be for the couples that have actually made it. Why celebrate if you’re simply making a choice to be together? There should be more societal emphasis on celebrating the anniversaries rather than the beginning of the relationship. Just my two cents. Why did you write this whole thing as if forced weddings deserve to be celebrated, but consensual weddings don’t?
