It’s about loving what you find — recognizing that this is a place where you’re going to impact people’s lives (even if it’s just really enjoying a drink or meal) and connecting with groups of coworkers that have found their way to a similar place as you from a variety of paths. Waiters and baristas often do not get paid livable wages in high CoL areas. Nobody loves any job when said job brings only destitution. Yeah, I’ve been with my current job for a long time and we have policies in place where after a certain number of years you get more PTO each year. At this point I’m up to 6 weeks each year and we get another 2 weeks in the form of various holidays. So, altogether, I only work 44 weeks a year and currently I mostly do 40 hour weeks. There are a few long days here and there working on delivering something specific (some big go live or some big infrastructure project where it is all hands on deck so it goes smoothly).

Pretty good deal from where I’m sitting considering that I make a very decent living for someone my age (when you are earning multiple times the median income in the richest country in the world, I’d say that’s a very decent living). For me, there have been seasons when it was well more than half, but it never really bothered me since I was working on something that I felt was worthwhile. If that wasn’t the case, I don’t know how I would have gotten through it you know. We leave people behind when we leave, and there’s often going to be a sense of loss with that. We also leave things unfinished to varying degrees. We’ve put a lot of ourselves into the work we did, and now we’re leaving it behind and putting it in the hands of others.
