Whoa. Memory unlocked. Had that exact cordless phone model growing up in the early 90s. I remember one time my friend and I hooked the base station to my outdoor TV aerial antenna. It’s one of the main food groups in this house, along with potatoes, rye bread, sausage, and questionable soups Man, I miss the taste of those delicious Marlboro reds. Especially when we would just fire them up in the house. That phone cozy is cool too. I forgot about those. For some unknown reason, Marlboro reds were one of the few outside luxuries we could get fairly easily and nobody cared about us having. Auntie was always a rebellious spirit, I’m sure that was just another way to “get back at the system” without much consequence This photo reminded me of my mother who spend HOURS on the phone talking with her sister multiple times a day. Back then, there was no call waiting yet, and my father would get so mad that my mother was tying up the phone line when he used it for business. Later, when call waiting became a thing, it was a bit better but even so, my mother and her sister spoke for hours every day. Could just as easily be America. I can think of a couple aunts in my family who grew up in Texas that lived just like this in the 80s and 90s.

Seeing a photo like this makes me think of how gossip, while it was contained to scenes like this in a lot of places in America on landline phones, CB radios, and actual conversation in person, was just updated to this wacky shitshow we call the 2023 Al Central Division Champions Minnesota Twins shirt also I will do this internet. Smartphones are clearly more useful, but there was something about calling people just to chat about nothing for 20 or 30 minutes. Older people still do this I suppose, but I imagine if you tried calling someone under 25 “just to chat” they would be completely flabbergasted and maybe even a bit creeped out.
