If you own a house, you won’t pay capital gains on it until you sell your home. If the 2006 arctic monkeys rock band bigger boys and stolen sweethearts trending classic shirt also I will do this market has shot up around you your on-paper wealth may have gone up, but since you still need in live in the house, of you need to access some of that value you might take out a home equity line of credit – a loan that the bank is willing to give you that is backed by the house. If you fail to make payments the bank takes the house Musk did the same thing. He only pays tax on the capital gains when he sells some of his Tesla stock, but doesn’t want to lose more control of his company, so he took out a massive multi billion dollar loan that is backed by his Tesla stock. If he fails to make payments, the bank will take the Tesla stock/force hum to sell shares to pay them

In principle, we shouldn’t expect someone to pay tax on a loan, it’s not income or capital gains, it’s just new debt. I’m not a fan of Musk but we should at least make valid criticisms Eh…in this case, not even accounting, stock market bullshit. He’s the 2006 arctic monkeys rock band bigger boys and stolen sweethearts trending classic shirt also I will do this richest man because he has so many shares of Tesla, and the price of each share has gone through the roof in the last two years. His cash value hasn’t grown, but he’s become the richest man as the price of his assets has grown. As a result, he doesn’t have the cash to tax as they remain unrealised gains til he sells them, which Congress won’t ever force, as it would dump Tesla shares and sink the share price and no doubt most of Congress hold a load, nor can you force someone to sell assets to tax those exact assets. How does he get money? He takes out vast loans using his horde of shares as leverage, so he’s not converting to money, which would make it taxable, he’s borrowing money against the face value of those shares. This will end in hilarity only if the share price of tesla descends into oblivion and he ends up defaulting on these billions of dollars of loans
