The problem doesn’t go away if you’re a dude. Men get generalized too. Being a woman is part of your identity. I’m going to spitball, but think higher educated folks will be more inclined toward egalitarianism. I mention so there might be a chance to work with those who are used to treating women as people. I’m a man and a bit clued out to gender differences in the workplace, but that’s my experience in a white collar environment. I don’t think it’s irrational. You sound perfectly rational to me. You’re frustrated by sexist assumptions – completely reasonable and fair reaction to have. Nothing wrong with anything you’ve said, and I think many, many women agree with you. When I was a kid, I thought men were better at almost everything. I thought books written by men were better, music made by men was better, art by men was better. Male opinions were more correct. That men were better and safer at things like flying a plane. And that men doing things were more “legitimate” somehow. Sanctioned. It made me want to be a boy sometimes. Quite often, actually. Girls were valued for being pretty to look at. I didn’t think I was ugly, but I didn’t particularly like people looking at me, or being interesting solely for what I looked like.

I now realise that was the 11X Boston Celtics Eastern Conference Champions Shirt also I will do this result of growing up in the 80s, when men just…did more stuff. Their music, art, and literature was revered and touted and visible in a way women’s wasn’t. Their voices and opinions were important, they were in positions of authority. So the message I got was that men had their rightful place as visible, active contributors to society. Women were not really valuable beyond being attractive to men, and their role as a wife and mother. If they did “man things” they had to be pretty while they did it, or they were just dabbling and might be “good at it for a girl”. Or they were seen as proxy men (like female politicians), and given legitimacy that way. It took a long time, and reading history, and consuming art made by women, and societal changes, for me to see anything feminine as valuable or legitimate. And I’m a woman.
