Everybody I gave lucky money to (nieces and nephews of my friend) graciously accepted it. The problem was when I tried to give my friend a bottle of whiskey after people told me it was a decent gift to give my friend considering the 100 Days Of Mischief Managed Happy 100th Day Of School T-Shirt but in fact I love this circumstances. yea, for the whiskey part, 5 year is a long time. His dad and brother and brother in law drank with us too every day. It might be viewed as softer than whisky though. Also to show hospitality, he might be allowed to drink with guest. I guess that could be some kind of deal he has with his family. Going cold turkey would break him if he drinks every day like that.

It’s like, Vietnamese give lucky money to each other and even foreign friends, but they would feel awkward if the foreigners feel obligated to give back. I get that but he gave in eventually and then two days later he had his mom give it back. That was the weird part. He didn’t know how to say no, but then doesn’t feel right. People don’t go to that extreme to feign no. Maximum two “oh no I can’t accept” are enough.
